    1. was the one I was thinking of as well, although I couldn’t think why. Then it hit me—it’s the nose.

The first one Lt. Kyle, played by John Winston. The second was Eddie Pasky, who played Lt. Leslie. Interestingly, he died in the episode “Obsession”—but he didn’t let that stop him. He was back on the bridge in the next episode. He was also one of the rare recurring minor characters who actually got to sit in the captain’s chair. Twice.

    “Clearly you’ve never taken a life-changing vacation”

Au contraire mon frère. I’ve actually slept in buildings older than Machu Picchu. I just don’t think that seeing it with a group of senior citizens makes it a “life changing experience”.

He could have had one in the village, but he didn’t want that. And there’s nothing wrong with that—part of the fun of travelling is that you find out a surprising amount about yourself.

Gunther, you were not trekking across Africa in search of David Livingstone. You were staying in a business-class hotel in a national capital, and then took little more than a day trip “into the wild”. Your “incredible adventure” was the equivalent of staying at the Intercontinental in D.C. and taking a side-trip to West Virginia.

    IOW, get over yourself.

Maybe true of actors, but you only get to be an astronaut if you’re already quite successful. Pilots need at least a BS in engineering, biological science, physical science, or mathematics, although NASA would prefer an advanced degree. You also need 1000 hours in command of a jet, with test pilot experience preferred.

That’s what it takes for them even to look at you.

I was just going to point that out. Something about the act of note taking itself seems to improve the chances that information will be recorded. It may be because you can’t write everything down, so you have to determine what the important parts are.

I’ve got a weekly conference call as part of my job, and I always take hand-written notes. Heck, I even use a fountain pen, because I like the way it feels in my hand and on the paper.
