Commenters are beating you over the head, Mr. Ramsey, and rightly so. I suggest a different approach, one that shows who owns US debt and what might happen if we paid it off. Or, how about a cartoon showing a Net Worth view that compares debt with assets owned by the government. Once you get these views across, you could work on showing how balancing the federal budget would cause monstrous instability in our economy. Go for it, Mr. Ramsey, there is important work to do.

Stantis should look at Kevin Gallagher’s cartoon. Critics argue “false choice,” that more / longer sanctions will produce a better agreement. Not likely given that the other parties to this agreement will begin trading with Iran (beating US firms to market).

Great Cartoon. Fresh perspective. Thanks. Charlie555, do you pretend to speak for women, or just your priest? I disagree with your point.

Thank you, Baslim, for useful history. And, Marten, you make a good point (for a fur-bearer).

Our President and Economists say Grexit would not much affect the US economy. Correct. Greek’s corruption and failure to collect taxes from the rich: correct again. Benson: we share the same diseases but we can manage ours by controlling the US$.

What would Jesus pack? NRA logic holds that he must protect himself.

I burst into laughter on this one. The Republican base does not have all the Homers, maybe only 90%. Economists — I am one — pretend that people are rational beings who are guided by self-interest. Weak logic, that is. Decision making is more Homer than rational.

Paul is guilty of grandstanding, I agree, but in my opinion he brought attention to a serious problem. The so-called Freedom Act still allows the so-called Intelligence agencies too much freedom to spy, store and persecute.

The State of SC “succeeded” in competition to locate a Volvo factory near Charleston. Gifts appear to include tax forgiveness (State giving away County and City taxes), training workers, site development, etc. Number vary from $200 to $500 million. A good deal? For whom? The BMW factory is working out well (tho I haven’t seen the public finance ledger) but Volvo’s market share is what? > zero?

Defenders write that such deals are transparent and legal. Legal, yes. Obvious to citizens, no. Not even to those who might care if they knew. Do the citizens whose tax base is given away get to vote on it? No.
