If a fatwah scare you, we could go to a major Buddhist country and put earphones on a picture of Buddha. Buddhists are peaceful, right?

“YANGON, Myanmar (AP) — A New Zealand bar manager in Myanmar has been arrested for allegedly insulting Buddhism after posting an online advertisement showing a psychedelic image of Buddha wearing headphones, police said Friday.”

“Whaaaaaaat? You want a fatwah? Mohammed is thought of (by some) as G-d; St.Peter isn’t….but who am I, a mere Jew, to quibble??”

I don’t think any Muslims consider Mohammed as G-d.

Their defining statement of faith (akin to Judaism’s “Shema”) is:

“There is one G-d and Mohammed is his prophet.”

They believe the G-d that Mohammed proclaimed to be the true description of the same G-d as as what the Jewish and Christian scriptures distorted.

    Mohammed:Allah :: Peter:Jesus :: Moses:YHWH

    is a close comparison.

(“allah” is the Arabic word; related to Hebrew “el”, both being Semitic. Like English “god” which is a generic term to be applied to Thor, Athena, Isis, etc. as well as The One True G-d that monotheists proclaim. Capitalized, “Allah”, is what Arabic speaking Muslims, Christians & Jews say to refer to the true Deity as they see him. We monotheists argue amongst ourselves as to whether or not the other 2 monotheists are so wrong as to not be speaking of the the true “G-d” when they use the word.)

“Men Without Chests”, prescient speech by C.S.Lewis, preserved in his book “The Abolition of Man”.
Read Huxley’s “Brave New World” , first.

Trivia: both men died the same day: Nov 22, 1963, same as JFK.

Al Jazeera claims that NASA Administrator Charles Bolden told them that President Obama gave him three primary tasks: encourage children to learn about math and science, improve relations with foreign nations and “perhaps foremost, he wanted me to find a way to reach out to the Muslim world and engage much more with dominantly Muslim nations to help them feel good about their historic contribution to science … and math and engineering.”

Launching rockets isn’t on that list.

To be fair, that was back in 2010, & there have been other mission goals have come & gone since then. Things like humans landing on an asteroid. I think that was later changed to unmanned. I think NASA’s former missions take too long to come to fruition within the span of one administration, so aren’t politically feasible today.

Furthermore, I like letting others do the low earth orbit rocketry. I don’t think we need NASA to do that anymore. Hopefully, American private enterprise will pick up the slack instead of Soviet technology. Maybe the money incentives aren’t sufficient. Maybe they shouldn’t be.

    CG,
Old’s point is that they aren’t all violent extremists. He is right.
I was going to say it’s not all black&white, but a better metaphor than shades of grey, is black & white splotches irregularly scattered throughout the world.
The bad guys are not in one country.
    Most are not Arab.
The Violent Jihadists are mixed into the general population all over. (E.g., Muslim Brotherhood took over Egypt, onlt to be rejected by most Egyptians.)
It’s more like a worldwide civil war, with both factions living side-by-side interspersed.
That is the enemy’s perspective. We should adapt to that.
