After the uncle was hit by a car his cane could have landed anywhere so its position after the accident is meaningless. A more obvious clue is that the car should have suffered some kind of damage or at least a dent or scratch, but the hood seems to be in perfect shape.

I found that odd too. He must have learned a thing or two from Jason on using math to be a nuisance.

The goofy criminals could have used the typewriter (probably the only one left in the county) to write the suicide note. But since they took the trouble to forge a handwritten note, a test could easily show whether it was actually written by the victim.

An easier check are the alleged victim’s phone records. They would show if it was him who placed the call to Don Mattis.

This one I figured out – despite the technical inconsistencies pointed out by other posters I think the clues are there. However – how come the secretary’s testimony is not being questioned? She could perfectly be the murderer and there are no witnesses. A GSR test on her should be the first step rather than the far-fetched tape recorder solution.

If “at least” one item is a fake, the answer should mention other obvious fakes: the Irene Adler portrait correctly pointed out by Neil F., and the Strand magazine. A quick internet search shows that the cover title reads “The Strand Magazine” and not just “Strand”. Besides, who would handle and pass around a 120+ year-old magazine in apparent mint condition with their bare hands?

How come the lights in the building have been turned on and off all over the place? This is unusual during the day and even more so at 4:30 am in the morning. Plus, the cloud has disappeared in only 11 minutes. This is much more credible evidence than the “east-west” direction of the moon.
