These exchanges between Huey and Jazmine stirred up a lot of controversy when they first ran. McGruder received a lot of angry backlash from all directions, with many people assuming that Huey’s absolutism was the author’s point of view on biracial identity, or that Jazmine’s insecurities regarding her heritage were intended as some kind of universal blanket statement.

It’s great to see Phoebe out-weirded. Adds another dimension to her character when she finds herself the straight man.

I’m being serious right now. Do sisters like Jeri really exist? I can’t imagine being so awful for no reason at all at a time like this.

I also love the mom’s grin in panel four. Somehow that’s just touching. I like that other people noticed it, too.

Hey. I just wanted to say that I ADORE this background. Gorgeous colors. Very evocative of that time of early evening in that kind of neighborhood setting. I especially love the sky because you don’t often see that particular “urban” night sky color depicted in comics. Bravo.

Riley’s character in the comic and the animated series is basically the same, but it’s expressed in totally different ways. It’s very hard to imagine the animated Riley talking like the comic strip Riley.
