No one knows why — though it’s probably not due to someone shaving off a piece — but the International Prototype Kilogram really does seem to have lost about 50 micrograms over time: http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2007/09/070921110735.htm

    “Ophiucus.” No “R”. Pronounced “Oh-fie-uh-cuss.”

P.S. Snow and ice are fairly uncommon around here, so most people don’t have tire chains, and I live about halfway up a hill which can be difficult to get this far and almost impossible to get any further up when it’s icy and one doesn’t have chains or at least (maybe) 4WD, so people in places like this may as well plan to stay in place until it warms and thaws, which fortunately is almost never more than a couple of days or so . . .

I know I’m a day late, but here the phenomenon is so common it’s mentioned every time snow flurries are forecast (I haven’t heard if the latest forecast is that they are still possible sometime tomorrow). It’s possible that some of the folks who seem like they have been storing up extra bulk for the winter may be principally concerned about having milk & bread and perhaps other staples on hand for their kids or grandkids . . . also they go for batteries, candles, kerosene fuel, and such in case the power goes out, possibly for an extended period if ice pulls down the wires or causes limbs to fall across them, etc.

What’s described in the second panel is what happened to my mother when she was about twelve and a tornado brought the chimney down on top of the bed she had gone under for protection and broke her back . . .

That happens here over and over every night. But it’s “Rusty,” not “Dusty.”

Here it was cat food for two cats, and I managed to put it off until Saturday to avoid the worst of the crowds . . .

Some snakes out West were tough enough that one could run over them, back over them, then run over them again and they’d still be able to crawl away . . .
