Mere high schoolers, these excellent students have earned a gap year to learn some things. Rosa’s unbridled enthusiasm may get curbed, but she’ll learn and it will lead her to opportunities and accomplishments. Gunth old boy, I am hard on you. But your lesson better be to learn to overcome your insecurities and fears to unleash those talents. The world needs them. Rosa, I don’t believe, can live with someone so self-obsessive. Spread your wings Gunther!

    Take your slurs elsewhere.

That’s good. I was thinking of how empowering the Uncle is for the county – bring good money in and providing jobs for many. Good charity IS good work, but good business is good too.

Rosa’s drive and commitment to help those in need is laudable. And it explains what she’s even doing with conflicted Gunther, who looks more like a project than a boyfriend. Gunther just doesn’t look and act like one of those shiny and enthusiastic volunteer doctors, nurses, and students that we see. Who is the real Gunther? I’m worried his developing Oedipal complex will define him.

Maybe the uncle uses the Hollywood style “clinic” to earn money from celebs or the wealthy to fund outreach clinics. That building and secretary seem too glitzy. Maybe we are being setup by Evans.

He will grow and adapt, the human’s greatest characteristic.

    I agree. He absolutely should.

    gkid:

Gunther IS good, agreed. But I think he’ll get chewed up by our world which both expects him to promote himself wisely and assertively and be savvy about the schemes of others. He believes in the Golden Rule, which few people really follow. Another way to put it: “If you snooze, you lose.” Sorry Gunther old buddy – hope you get that wake up call early.

A number of my friend’s kids have done Americore after college didn’t work. I’ve heard only positive reviews about the experiences.

If hasn’t been said, Peace Corp does mostly require a 4 year degree or very special skills.

    “…All are thrilled when a decent man…”

I think you raise a perspective of needs and thoughts that should be thought through and appreciated. I haven’t walked a mile in those shoes, that’s true. And maybe we’re not giving credit to Gunth for the guy he is. Not gay certainly, but obviously very sensitive, expressive, and very needy. It would be a fair question to ask what does Rosa see in him at their ages. Women appreciating “nice guys”, not to mention guys pretty immature, needy and insecure, are usually older, more mature. As a nice guy, he’s very needy and insecure, even more than we thought. Maybe Quill, the nice guy that is not needy or insecure will model that confidence for him this “year.” But the Luann conflict may take Greg’s center stage.
