What’s even more disturbing is that this strip was published more than 20 years ago.

Calvin doesn’t have a clue what makes the world go ‘round. But we old-timers who have it all figured out still need clueless troublemakers like Cal. Without them, we’d doze off into smug oblivion.

I wonder if this was BW’s state of mind leading up to his retirement. In his very last strip, he put it much more poetically than Calvin though. He said, “Let’s go exploring” instead of “Lemme outta here!!!”

You ARE a walking endorsement, Calvin. For the dominant moral force in our society. But don’t get me started: BW said it better a quarter century ago.

Folks, and I mean each of us, please keep the tone civil. Mr. Watterson frequently includes social commentary in his humor, and if we ignore the “humor” part, we are missing the main point — spreading laughter and smiles.

Good ol’ Hobbes: Always unexpected yet always down-to-earth.

Calvin did look younger then. So did we. (Thanks to BW for his ink and words to please our eyes and ears, and his humor and humanity to open our hearts.)

Reminds me of the strip where Calvin is awakened by Hobbes talking in his sleep about tuna fish sandwiches. Poor Calvin is afraid to fall asleep—next to a hungry tiger! Of course Hobbes would feel bad if he ate his little buddy, but we couldn’t really blame him. Tigers are creatures of flawless instinct. That’s why we love them.

I can still remember how intolerable a Dad-lecture was. Sometimes giving a Dad-lecture is the only way we dads can maintain our tenuous grip on reality when faced with the impossibilities of parenting.

I never before noticed that Hobbes was a lefty. Huh. Stands to reason when you think of it.
