    Yes, before there were specific immigration laws people just got off the boat and went to where they wanted to settle. My earliest ancestors came over around 1745, then from Germany around 1845, then my grandparents from Carpathio Rusia in 1896. So probably in 1845 there were laws and for sure in 1896. Recruiters went to the Carpathians and my grandfather and family came over to work in the Southwestern coalfields.

    I grew up in the olden days when women’s occupations were narrowed to nurse, teacher or social worker. This was in the late 50’s. Thank God for the liberation movement in the late 60’s.
