    Also, the ice that was already in the ocean does raise the sea level a little bit when it melts, because of the difference in salinity. (And the water actually expands a little when it’s warmer.) But, true, the major contributor to rising sea level is the melting of glaciers and ice shelves from land into the ocean.

    I wonder: 1) Does Mark Buford think the acronym is actually DEFAX; and if so, what does he think it stands for? 2) Does he just spell things phonetically? 3) Is he making a joke with the word?

    That’s not correct hydrostatics; instead, the outside air pressure would push the liquid beverage up into the straw (which is what happens normally when you “suck” liquid through a straw). Still not a good thing. Fortunately, it takes a lot of pressure to penetrate the eyeball.

    Time warp? Take a look at the past century of comic strips. It’s normal for characters not to age, and for infants to remain tiny for years. That’s why the strips in which characters age realistically are notable exceptions (e.g., Gasoline Alley).
