1988 was the first election I was old enough to vote in. I guess I missed the good old days.

It’s becoming increasingly harder for faiths to claim a space that can’t be seen in today’s modern world. Heaven used to be “up there,” but now that we’ve been there we’ve seen that it’s not literally true. Time to think in the metaphor, and Karen Armstrong says that a metaphor can be stronger than Western logical reality. God may be somewhere that science can’t now see, but there lies the God of the gaps. Religious figures and atheists keep trying to resolve religion in terms of logic, and it can get silly at times.

An addendum to Number 3 above. I doubt Mother Teresa woke up each morning saying, “I don’t think I’ve done enough to get into heaven. I must do more.” Instead she saw people who needed her help, and she helped them. If religion was the framework that pushed her in the right direction to help others, then great! If people start doing things to get into heaven, or worse, to avoid hell, then they are no longer performing selfless acts. But no harm, no foul. Few people actually think that way and make a heaven/hell moral calculus.

When things go wrong is when large organizations like The Catholic Church get their own institutional momentum, and start to do things that cause harm as collateral damage. Priestly celibacy may have made sense when The Church would have had to support his family, but times have changed.

I gave him the benefit of the doubt and assumed he wanted real information. Yes, I’m that kind of liberal, the one who actually wants to understand how other people think. I’m the reason Air America failed and NPR is still going strong.

    I’ll give it a try.

    1. That’s what secular humanism is all about.

    2. Christopher Hitchens criticized Mother Teresa, a view I don’t endorse.

    3. As my mom always says, “Life is unfair.” To elaborate, people think there must be more meaning to life, therefor there ought to be an afterlife, reward for good people, and punishment for bad people. The fact that things ought to be this way is more evidence that an afterlife system would be created if there wasn’t one, rather than evidence itself for an afterlife. If something seems too good to be true, it probably is.

    4. In God We Trust on the coins, a church on every corner, religious people censoring what’s left of broadcast TV, etc, etc,

5a (there are two 5’s) Self-professed Christians have no problem using the Old Testament as almost all the Biblical prohibition of gays. In the mega-church pop religion making most of the noise these days, the only required beliefs are Sunday School versions of the Genesis stories of Adam and Eve, and Noah’s Ark. Rarely do they seem to teach New Testament toleration (Love thy neighbor) of those outside their church who don’t want to convert.

5b. Keep believing! If it doesn’t hurt other people, I have no problem with it. Infidelity can hurt other people regardless of religion.

    6. Examples of atheists, uh, commenting on other religions:

    Judaism: http://www.patheos.com/blogs/friendlyatheist/2015/3/22/seven-children-perish-in-brooklyn-house-fire-nyfd-suspects-that-a-hot-plate-a-sabbath-loophole-is-to-blame/

Hinduism: The aforementioned attacks on Muslims during the India/Pakistan partition

Islam: Are you kidding? Have you not read an atheist message board? See also Charlie Hebdo.

    7. I’ll admit it’s hard to tease out religious motivation from normal human thought. People used religion to both justify and end slavery. I’ve just been reading about Israel’s suppression of Palestine, and then there was the Northern Ireland conflict. Religion itself isn’t a guarantee of good things, especially when it becomes “My team is better than your team.”

I would reverse the feeling/thinking labels on the candidates. Trump is trying to use the feeling of fear to keep the voters from thinking. “They’re rapists! They’re murders!” Remember, the Tea Party is suspicious of intellectuals, and Hillary strikes me as too wonky.

When small suburban cities fail, they get absorbed by a neighboring suburb. I can see Canada adding 50 new provinces in a year’s time.

Now I’m curious to see if there is a Pokestop at Nentendo of America’s campus in Redmond. I probably won’t bother to get the app to find out.
