    Yup, that’s a coin. Looks like we’re being shown the rules of magic in this universe, and reading the nature of an enchantment involves rotating a coin between the fingers.

    How did he find two matching pairs that are large enough for his feet? Implies that the adults have identical boots, and that’s not how any household I know of copes with the “whose boots” problem!

    Indeed, tobacco is post-Columbian in Western Europe. However, it’s not remotely the only substance that can be enjoyed by the act of smoking and I don’t know how long ago, or where, someome first discovered that drawing smoke into his lungs was pleasant: probably, like pottery, this was discovered many times and in many places. Once one wants to do this, the design of a pipe is one obvious way to preserve a precious resource though not the only way.
