The US and EU should have thought that before they started supporting ethnic nationalism in Ukraine.

More like an illusion. Soldiers with rifles never set foot in the polling stations.

Baltic states are already in NATO. In fact, this is the exact reason why Russia annexed Crimea. After Russia had allowed the Soviet Union to be peacefully dissolved, it hoped that NATO would also disappear, but instead NATO espanded to include Poland and the Baltics during the time when Russia was at its weakest. Russia takes NATO expansion as a threat and an insult. And annexation of Crimea was Russia’s way to ensure that it’s naval base would not fall into NATO’s hands. Further expansion would make matters even worse for Ukraine and Europe. So if you want peace with Russia, you should speak softly and leave the big stick at home.

Nobody was forcing Crimeans to come to the referendum and vote for joining Russia. The soldiers in Crimea were there to ensure the referendum happens. They held a gun to the head of neo-nazi thugs from Kiev who threatened to come to Crimea and quash any attempts at a referendum.

That’s not true. The other choice was a ‘yes’ for staying in Ukraine with greater autonomous rights.

Learn some history before making silly cartoons. In 1940s there was WAR with Hitler. And Russia had no body of water to hide from the invasion.

This looks like Bulgaria after joining the EU.

The other option was to vote ‘yes’ for remaining in Ukraine (but with greater autonomous rights). So most people really voted yes for Russia.

Actually Crimea had trouble breathing when it was part of Ukraine. 20 years ago Crimea was promised prosperity and autonomy as part of independent Ukraine. Instead most of its autonomous right were taken away, and its profits from natural gas industry and rent paid by Russia for the navy base went straight to Kiev. No wonder Crimeans are saying ‘Niet’ to Ukraine during the referendum.

Only the bicycle voted to leave. And the ‘Ukraine’ bicycle rack is rusty and falling apart.
