It will be a long time before Michael meets Deanna. In fact, we have a ways to go before he meets Martha at summer camp.

    MAD Magazine did it better:
A tire on a hearse pops. The pallbearer uses his cellphone.
Pallbearer: Bad news boss. i just had a blowout, and the hearse has no spare tire.
Funeral Director: @#$%! How far are you from the cemetary, Tom?
    Pallbearer: About two miles.
Funeral Director: The casket needs to be there by 3:30! Hitch a ride, alert the cops, do what you must but get it there!
The pallbearer is then seen lugging the coffin by foot while he has it partially opened while the corpse’s thumb is extended, shocking motorists.

Sounds like the book “Iggie’s House” by Judy Blume, where a girl’s best friend. named Iggie, moved away as her father was in the US military and had been sent to Japan for his next assignment. Soon a black family moves in to the house. The girl is dealing with the same emptiness as Michael and wonders if she could run away to Japan, where at least there will be someone she knows.

Man, Elly has some serious constipation in the fourth panel of the black & white strip you provided! She looks like she is struggling to drop a load in front of Connie.

Bill Watterson was making fun of the mainstream media, as well as himself, when Calvin remarked “What good is any book if it has not been made into a TV show?”

Did Lynn Johnston copy a joke from the Simpsons?
Simpsons: When Bart and Lisa went to summer camp, Homer and Marge look sad until the bus is out of earshot, then the Simpsons (along with all the other parents) start celebrating the start of a kid-free summer.
FBOFW: When Michael and Elizabeth went to summer camp, John and Elly look sad until the bus is out of earshot, then the Pattersons (along with all the other parents) start celebrating the start of a kid-free summer.

Inheritances are not a guarantee of wealth. Using the example of intergenerational inheritances, if the benefactor dies and leaves his wealth to his son, now his son must be fiscally responsible or he will lose the money. Should he die and bequeath his wealth, it is now incumbent upon the grandson to be fiscally responsible.

It is a likely problem as the strip transitioned from black & white to color. That has also been seen with Lawrence; sometimes his skin goes from cocoa bronze to fish belly white. Or maybe Lawrence has a career in pop music ahead of him!

Connie would eventually marry a white man who actually was a father figure to Lawrence, as opposed to that witch doctor in Brazil.

The lady who pays the freight gets to call the shots. If Lawrence was cleaning the house regularly, paying water, sewage, & electric bills, putting food on the table and paying Canada’s high property taxes, then he would be able to claim it as his house.
