Is Michael a hillbilly? Most kids say “Mom” or “Mother” but he yells “Mah” at the top of his lungs to the point the Enjos next door can hear him perfectly. But there was a funny strip where his mother responded.

    Elly{off-panel}: Well then, feed him!

Even if it was just Elly, her usual reaction would be screeching, anger that something has gone wrong, or burst into tears. It is actually surprising that she accepts it as an honest mistake and takes it in stride. A big part of Elly’s motherhood role is that she feels in the shadow of her own mother, whom Elly viewed as having her act together. On top of that, Elly grew up in the most economically prosperous period in history, the 1950s, and her father was an excellent provider. She wonders why she and John have to work so hard to put food on the table.
