    Idea for the next strip:
Jim: John sure was mad at me!
Marian: He has calmed down now. He realizes you did not do that on purpose. Elly and John are hiring a contractor to fix the ceiling.
Jim: Well, that is quite noble of John, considering how hard he works to bring food to the table. How will they afford the contractor?
Marian: I gave them next month’s social security.

Michael is known for his piggish attitude and disrespect to his elders. It is not just his parents or grandparents. When Uncle Phil was playing his trumpet for the kids to show them the joys of music, Michael rudely told him “Quiet! You are drowning out Sesame Street”.
Too bad John or Elly did not sit down Michael, force him to apologize to his uncle then make a remark such as “Sesame Street will always come back, but you only have your family for a limited amount of time. Time you did not spend with your family can never be bought back, and after the funeral, your family is never coming back”.

Looks like the ceiling repair costs are coming out of grandpa’s social security.

An idea for the next strip:
Jim: “I feel so bad about breaking the ceiling.”
Marian: “Don’t worry Jim. John and Elly have hired a professional workman to repair ir.”
Jim: That is noble of them, considering how much John struggles to bring food to the table. How were they able to afford the repair bill?
Marian: I gave them next month’s social security.

Probably explains why Lynn’s family was the subject of jokes and people generally avoided her: they were concerned that anything they said got turned into an FBOFW storyline. From Wikipedia: “An example of a script mother has been Lynn Johnston, who has been criticized for making a fast buck off her children (and husband) in her comic strip For Better or for Worse, as opposed to many cartoonists such as Charles Schultz and Berke Breathed who make up fictional characters. Johnston’s children eventually had to be pulled out of school due to the constant bullying and embarrassment they received in being compared to their comic strip counterparts, and placed into a private school”

No wonder why John can’t pay the mortgage, buy his wife a nice dress or a Nintendo for the kids.

Jim did some interfering. However, after Marian was boxed up at the funeral parlor then given her dirt nap that Jim stayed out of Elly’s rulemaking. Also, there is no record of Jim’s second wife trying to run Elly’s house like it is hers.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I never saw Jim’s second wife rearranging Elly’s kitchen to suit her way, nor was she openly putting down her stepdaughter’s methods of child-rearing or rules of the house.

Marian is Elizabeth’s maternal grandmother. By and large it seemed Elly got along well with her mother-in-law. Wonder how Marian will feel if James found another woman?

It could have gone differently in the fire. At least Michael would finally have been considerate of his family, all John and Elly would have needed to do after the fire was buy an urn, go to the scene of the fire, fill the urn with ashes, then John and Elly would place Michael on their mantle! John could then remark, “Michael had an expensive wedding but the cheapest funeral” and Elly would say “That was courteous of him to do his own cremation”.
