    MY memory, too, of the general store with the penny-candy bins: why did you add ‘49’ to your username? Mine is because I had been throwing knuckleballs (on and off) for twelve years when Tim Wakefield (former RED SOX great)
    was born on my birthday.

    I learned, from Peter Washington, who owned property at the end of the cove south of our house, that his mule knew how to traverse a hill in the lane: it took a diagonal path, up or down. I use that approach every time I take a full recycling can or trash can down MY driveway to the street for collection.

    Peter’s comment was, “Mule knows”.

    Dhyan Singh, our cook in 1969-1970 Rajasthan, India, could use a paring knife that he had bought on the used-utensils market, sharpen in on the marble counter in the kitchen, and cut potatoes so thin that when he put them into a karhai with Dalda, he produced ‘crisps’ that swelled!
    We were very impressed!
