    The best hiccup cure I ever saw came from my dad. We were at Wendy’s and my sister started hiccuping. My dad said “one second, I can cure this”, picked up a plastic spoon, and hit her in the face with it. It startled the hiccups right out of her.

    If you completely, unambiguously understand what the person was going for, then if you ask me, it is perfectly fine. This word has been used in this fashion for over 600 years. Society at large has deemed it an acceptable use of the word. If you can invent another single word to take its place, I invite you to do so.
