    Not to mention the fact that, living in Nazarus, which was an independent country allied to Rome and NOT under Roman rule, Mary and Joseph would have had no reason to go to Bethlehem for the great Roman census.

    But that’s the problem when you wait a hundred years to tell the story, and you’re so obsessed with religion that you forget your own history.

    Actually, if you read the original strips featuring Joanie’s husband, he comes off more as an ethnic Catholic as far as ancestry – my impression was a shanty Irishman with some hillbilly in him.

    I remember Joanie’s line in the final panel as being – “I creamed him with a waffle iron.” Am I mistaken, or did Trudeau re-write this for a modern audience?
