The only problem with that idea is the fact that the floors of bat caves are inches (and sometimes feet or yards) deep in bat guano, which is crawling with the zillions of voracious bugs which feed on it. Any bat unlucky enough to fall into those disgusting piles doesn’t last very long.

And don’t forget romance novels. They don’t call them “bodice-rippers” for nothing. Georgette Heyer got away with having a new bride announcing that being married was wonderful, but my current favorite authors write pages of the obligatory, explicit bedroom scenes. Magazines are tame compared to them. Although, I’ll admit that I’ve gotten to the point where I just skim past them (even the steamiest, well-written ones) in order to get back to the story—there’s only so many ways to describe the action, after all, and it does get a little tedious, especially if the main story is interesting enough for me to read it in the first place.

Amazon has “Complete Little Orphan Annie Volume 10. 1941-43” available for pre-order for $32.69. It’s due out in April 2014. However, if it’s like vol.9 it may be later in the year. I don’t care when I get it, I’ve got my order in.

This strip doesn’t have a point in the same way Franz Kafka’s works don’t have a point. Tom is a modern Gregor Samsa in a senseless dystopian universe … which is somehow addictive to those of us who are fans.

A rather clever literary allusion today:
From Four Saints in Three Acts, by Gertrude Stein
Pigeons on the grass alas. Pigeons on the grass alas. Short longer grass short longer longer shorter yellow grass. Pigeons large pigeons on the shorter longer yellow grass alas pigeons on the grass. If they were not pigeons what were they. If they were not pigeons on the grass alas what were they. He had heard of a third and he asked about it it was a magpie in the sky. If a magpie in the sky on the sky can not cry if the pigeon on the grass alas can alas and to pass the pigeon on the grass alas and the magpie in the sky on the sky and to try and to try alas on the grass alas the pigeon on the grass the pigeon on the grass and alas. They might be very well they might be very well very well they might be. Let Lucy Lily Lily Lucy Lucy let Lucy Lucy Lily Lily Lily Lily Lily let Lily Lucy Lucy let Lily. Let Lucy Lily.

Aren’t most cases of livestock killing which are blamed on wolves the work of packs of feral dogs, which do kill for sport. (The danger from those packs is vividly recounted in Tom Brown’s book “The Tracker”, which I highly recommend.) And isn’t that wolf knife trap just a legend (like urban legends but set in the wilderness).

Perhaps, but there are also husbands who expect their wives to agree with all of their opinions … only they don’t bother to ask.

My shell is 69, my soul is whatever it wants to be at the time. Today, I was 16 (I rode my horse in a parade on a day like today), 35 (I dug in my garden once when the wind blew like today) and 40 (that’s when I planted the roses whose blossoms I cut today). Who knows how old I’ll be tomorrow.
