The artist can only see out of one eye (apparently his right eye), so his paintings only show half the scene – the half he can see with his good eye.

500 meters is a standard (simulated) distance on a rowing machine. 1:24 is AMAZINGLY fast for 500 meters – I’m generally around 2:15 but then I’m not pushing extremely hard. Of course, I suppose the rower could have the resistance set very low – I put the resistance at 9 on a 10-level setting. As far as the “rowing machine rowing machine”, I’m assuming it’s reference to someone who masters something as a machine, but I would have thought “rowing machine machine” would have made more sense.

HEMP: High altitude Electro-Magnetic Pulse. Set off a hydrogen bomb 50 or so miles up. You get a pulse of broadband electromagnetic radiation that fries everything electronic over a wide area. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electromagnetic_pulse#Nuclear_.28NEMP.29_and_high_altitude_nuclear_.28HEMP.29
