I do not think that the US has any clear national interest in joining such a “Community” or, later on, “Union”. After all, Churchill and many others referred to a “United States of Europe”. The EU grew out of cooperative trade agreements and went from there.

The US does have a clear interest in trading with and through the EU. However, the biggest interest that the US and the peoples in the European zone have is Peace.

The situation with the EU has always been complex, and, with the fact of the U.K. Referendum going for Exit, it just got a little more messy. As has the situation that the British face.

Having said that, there is one area where the EU and it’s precursors have had a clearly good effect.

Up through 1945, there was a war in the European zone, including the British Isles, roughly every 30 years. Over centuries, every 30 years, the newest generation lost young men to war. Every 30 years.

There has not been such a war in the European zone for 70 years. We had the collapse of Yugoslavia, and various other behind-the-iron-curtain countries, but not a major war.

The destabilization of the EU could be a threat to continued peace.

Re. " … Majority to decide?"

I suppose that the right way would be to reuse the same criteria that was used to join, originally. I confess that I don’t know if it was done in Parliment, or referendum (1/2?, 2/3?, Etc.) or ‘other’.

Interesting; We will probably see the $ as the reference currency in all the discussions that will follow over the next few weeks / months. Not the Yuan, not the Yen, …

Mr. Brown, you just gave us here in the USA a clear message.
This message is that we are capable of holding a referendum and forcing an exit of the USA from the European Union.
I have to say that this doesn’t really help anything.

    mikefive & Uncle Joe:

You may know this, but … The percentage of US citizens on the list is really quite small. (From a USA Today article):

“From the FBI’s database, the Transportation Security Administration gets two lists: The selectee list, which subjects travelers to greater scrutiny, and the no-fly list, which bars the person from boarding a plane, according to the Congressional Research Service. News reports in late 2014 said the no-fly list had 47,000 names, including about 800 U.S. citizens.”

This from the Wikipedia article on Marcel Lehel (Guccifer). He has pled guilty and will be sentenced in September. It looks like the claim about hacking Ms. Clinton is not correct.:

In May 2016—one month after being extradited to the U.S., and while jailed in Virginia awaiting trial—Guccifer claimed to have repeatedly hacked Hillary Clinton’s email server. This claim occurred in the midst of an ongoing FBI probe of Clinton’s use of a private email server while serving as United States Secretary of State. Lehel claimed that the server was “like an open orchid on the Internet”19 and that “it was easy … easy for me, for everybody.”11

Lehel provided no proof of his claim, and U.S. investigators found no evidence to support the claim.202122 U.S. officials have also said that if Lehel had obtained information from Clinton’s servers, he would have publicly released such information, as he did when he obtained access to other high-profile individuals.22

    mikefive: You are correct.
And, as we now know, the “good guy with a gun” was acquitted.
But that death did not have to happen. If not for Mr. Zimmerman’s stalking, it would not have happened.

Mr. Zimmerman was stalking Mr. Martin. Mr. Zimmerman was armed with a gun. Mr. Martin was armed with a bag of Skittles.
Speaking of “protecting his life”, Mr. Martin put up a pretty good defense, and then Mr. Zimmerman shot him. One kid dead and one bag of skittles on the ground.

Please say something positive about Mr. Trump. It would be a nice change. We are now hearing some really awful things from him.
