We live in a working class neighborhood of modest single family homes. It has no HOA and we like it that way.
Sure, a few people have questionable garden decor (cutesy stone angels, potbelly stove planters, etc)
and we did have to get the county involved to keep people from parking on their front lawns, or neglecting to mow their grass, or parking boats and big trucks on the streets.
But, we have no one telling us not to fly the flag or put up Christmas lights, or which colors we can choose for our siding or trim. And, we have no HOA fees.
There are a few Penny style houses, but for the most part, the neighborhood is neat and orderly.
It just takes one or two well kept homes to set the style, and other people follow along.
And, we help each other: mowing elderly neighbors’ lawns, sharing snow removal, etc.

I grew up in a neighborhood of 1940’s vintage cape cod homes with brick facades.
Most people kept them unpainted, some with different trim colors.
A few people painted their bricks. Our next door neighbor painted his a very pretty creamy white.
But one house on our block was painted bright turquoise.
It became a landmark for giving directions.

Bill’s house is more the color of the DC Watermelon house near Logan Circle.

Tried, but failed to find a photo I could upload.

We had a sloped basement with a concrete floor, so we could skate board year round.
Since we had no skateboards, we took the loose cushions off our old “basement coach,” and tied our clip-on roller skates to them.
Those cushions were too floppy to ride standing up, but really comfortable to ride on sitting down.
They made great bumper cars, too.

Looks like it was printed on the back of a service station road map.
