“Wouldn’t that unplug your heating pad!!” was also said by Snoopy on February 9, 1975. I have no idea if that line was supposed to be some pop culture reference, or if it was an attempt to make a catchphrase of some sort.

Funny you mention that Charlie Brown, seeing as there’s been reruns due to cartoonists taking breaks (like Calvin and Hobbes during Bill Watterson’s two sabbaticals in the early 1990s) and reruns due to newspaper readers wanting to hold on to classic strips like this one.

Well, well, so it is actually in Ecclesiastes 9:

“For to him that is joined to all the living there is hope: for a living dog is better than a dead lion.” (Ecclesiastes 9:4)

I was thinking “Daylight Saving Time in February? A little early, isn’t it?”, so I checked Wikipedia to see if there was something weird about DST in 1974. It turns out that in 1974, there was a trial run of year-round DST in the United States which began on January 6, 1974 and ended on April 27, 1975 (with a brief period of standard time from October 27, 1974 to February 23, 1975). This experiment was prompted by the 1973 OAPEC oil embargo as a means of conserving energy.

Just a little explanation if you happened to be as confused as I was.

Actually, she was given a name. In the strip for September 27, 1994, Charlie Brown’s pen(cil) pal was revealed to be a girl from Scotland named Morag.

Comic strips are done weeks or even months in advance. Still, those first two panels are weirdly appropriate given the day this strip was published.
