Thank you, Pat Marrin, for “Francis.” Some readers spout fear and rage, but you pour forth refreshing portions of loving understanding spiced with wry humor.

As an Oberlin graduate, I couldn’t be more pleased with this “homage” to such a great liberal arts college and conservatory of music. I am so grateful that I was able to spend my undergraduate years at Oberlin.

The main issue with this cartoon is that the Speaker’s necktie was not red, it was in fact snot green. What profound meaning can this have?

Read up on the topic of transgendering, why it is necessary for some and what it entails. I think you will be ashamed of this cartoon once you have educated yourself. At least, I hope you have the integrity to be ashamed. // No, PAJ, Manning wouldn’t be safer in a women’s prison. We expect and tolerate rape and even murder in our prison system- it makes for good television series.

Thanks, Jim Morin, for this editorial cartoon. I note that the American media have not been known for bravery or depth of reporting for more than a decade. Snowden may have done well to go to a British journalist – the British, after all, are our close allies. Even so, the British government has tried to intimidate the Guardian, cooperating with our own government’s paranoia about “secrets” that really aren’t secret so much as not paid attention to and discussed among the citizenry. As for Pfc Manning, his pre-trial treatment was inhumane and amounted to torture and the trial itself was a kangaroo court. I hope he is credited for time served (under harsh conditions) and released to pursue freely the transgender process he so sorely needs.

This cartoon says more about our prison system and about male attitudes towards women and transgender persons than it does about Manning. It says a lot about the assumption that in prison men will rape other men to establish superiority and that this is funny. It’s not funny.

Arlo doesn’t need to explain what a ‘right’ is. He is putting the question to us: do we care about the phrase “among these” enough to ask what it means? To discuss it, it is necessary to distinguish “rights” from “wants” from “need” from “desires” – beginning with consideration of how we consider “Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” to be rights to begin with and what each implies. Arlo has tossed the ball into the reader’s court. Of course, there’s always tomorrow’s strip – this may be an entire week in light of Independence Day.

Mr Obama has taken less vacation time since coming into Office than has any President since the 1950s. Would you be so quick to criticize if his home state was Texasrather than Hawaii? Check the facts. Or are you just another chap who doesn’t like Mr. Obama never mind what he does or doesn’t do?

Yes, a fine strip. Too bad is has apparently been censored by some providers and papers.

I checked several newspapers – in some “this feature is not available” in others Doonesbury appears as usual. In the past certain papers have censored Doonesbury our of fear of back lash because of the theme. Is Go Comics engaging in censorship? Today’s strip deals with the fact that the world did not end on May 21. It is ironic, a bit sad, and very witty.
