    “Subtle” is not an adjective I would use in regard to the humor here. “Weak,” “labored,” and “awkward” are more accurate from what I see.

    I’ve said it before, having spent time reading strips from earlier decades, I find the current writing very disappointing. There is a difference between simple humor and lame humor, and I’m afraid the humor is usually of the latter variety. And who says every story arc has to be funny anyway? And often the story arc leads nowhere. King, Perry, and Moores all had stories that were humorous, but they also had stories that were topical and serious. I do wish the writing were on the same level as Mr. Scancarelli’s masterful draftsmanship.

    I have less problem dealing with Walt’s superannuation than I do with the non-aging of Rufus and Joel.

    Some weeks ago, I read some strips from the middle 70’s when Mores was still doing it. They were far funnier and much more grounded in reality.

    I do create. I am an artist, a filmmaker, an educator, and a storyteller. I respect Mr. Scancarelli’s graphic skills, but these wretched story lines are in no way worthy of this venerable strip. I there is anything that will ultimately be the demise of this institution and American icon, it will be the inanity and banality of the writing.

    I had the pleasure of looking at some strips from 30 years ago when Dick Moores was writing and drawing. The stories were more grounded in reality. Honestly, I’m beginning to wonder why I follow this.
