    My oldest daughter has always wanted to be a librarian. She has her Bachelor’s of Arts Degree. Her husband is stationed in Japan, so she’s waiting until she comes back to the States to get her Master’s. We were surprised to find out that Library Science is a Master’s program. She’s the first person on my husband side, to include extended family to go to, much less even graduate college. I have a year & a half. My extended side is full of degrees, but for just my immediate she’s the first to graduate for me as well. I took both girls to the library every week when they were kids. I also read to them until they were into their teens! They wanted me to! I always have been good at accents, so each character would get his/her own voice. The last book I read to the girls was the 5th “Harry Potter” book. Sirius Black’s mother’s portrait yelling about muggles in her house killed my throat! When my oldest was in 8th grade they were studying Poe, and her teacher had me come in & read “The Tell-Tale Heart”. I don’t know if they were just trying to be polite, but the kids actually seemed to enjoy it.

    Actually I have always loved the strip. I was pregnant with my youngest while Elly was pregnant with April. It was very neat to see some of the things I was going through addressed in the strip. I was much younger than Elly, so I didn’t relate to her feeling too old, but with being on forced bed rest she brightened up my day. I have always found John & Elly’s parenting skills to be somewhat realistic. I mentioned a while back that the newspaper I was reading at the time censored Lawrence’s coming out strips. I didn’t get to read them until years later when I found the book in the library that had those strips.

    It looks more like Nerwin’s finally eating his brussel sprouts. I don’t recall broccoli being round.

    There are a few artists that do their work like this. I have never understood why someone would want to mar somebody else’s property. The local wannabe’s keep “tagging” a telephone hub. The phone company has started putting dead tree limbs and such in front of it so as to deter them. They didn’t paint over the last one prior though, so you can still see it peeking above the shrub brush.

    Like in O’Henry’s “The Ransom of Red Chief”?

    He needs a tablecloth. This is actually a cute idea.

    On a different subject, I’ve got to ask
    @howtheduck why do you read this strip? You seem to gain no pleasure from it at all. When my paper ran “F-Minus” I thought it was a dumb strip, so I just skipped over it. On GoComics one has to actively click on strips that you dislike. Do you read “War & Peace” for fun?

    I’m 8th generation on my grandfather’s side & 5th generation on my Grandmother’s side born in Jersey (prior to that it was Ireland for both families). Both are my mom’s folks. We’re from South Jersey. I have told my husband (he’s from South Carolina) that all the jokes made about Jersey are due to the northern part of the state. As a kid I read that at one time there was so much animosity between North & South Jersey that they considered breaking off into 2 separate states. I think I was 11, so the details are sketchy. I know when I visited it as an adult I found it to be quite lovely. My father was sent to Vietnam when my mom was pregnant with me, so she went home to Grandmom. Even though spellcheck says it’s not a word, that was what she was called. Father’s mother was Grandma, & mother’s mother was GrandMOM. As far as I know there are no Irish mobsters in the family, but we are into construction. My Grandfathers on both sides were dead long before I was born. When your the youngest of the youngest it happens. My girls like to say that when we went to Jersey we visited a bunch of old people & dead people (family plots).

    I’m guessing he has OCD. I have a mild form. Before I started taking meds for my depression my house was usually spotless. That’s saying something since I have 2 kids. When my youngest was 3 weeks old my landlord came to visit and brought over a gorgeous blanket her mother had knitted for the baby. She had also brought along a toy for my older child. I was horrified and in tears that there was a tea ring on the table that I hadn’t wiped up. I just knew they were going to take away my babies because my house was dirty. Considering what I grew up with, at the fewest we had 3 dogs, but usually 7-9 dogs and at least 3 cats plus in Oklahoma we had a goat that lived in the house for a bit, one would think that messes wouldn’t bother me. The meds I’m on for depression are also prescribed for OCD. My house is still cleaner than most, but I don’t scrub constantly. My room however does have to be “just so”. Remember the TV show “Monk”? I totally understood where he was coming from. As I said in a different thread yeah I know, I have issues.

    @Observer fo Irony
    When my youngest was in 2nd grade she got up during a spelling test to get the dictionary!! Of course she got in trouble with the teacher, and I backed the teacher partially, but come on we tell kids to look in the dictionary if they don’t know how to spell. We just neglect to say NOT during a spelling test! She takes after her father and has always had a tough time with spelling. She’s not dyslexic though. At least the test said she wasn’t.

    I see that and what I am really seeing is all of the germs! Yuck! At least regular seats can be cleaned with a quick dap of bleach on a paper towel. Yeah I know. I am slowly killing the environment. I do NOT have a towel hanging in my bath. I have a roll of paper towels. When I do dry my dishes I usually use paper towels. My community recycles them, so at least they aren’t going into the landfill. Yes, I am aware I have issues…lol
