Years ago my husband & I had a friend who was a single mom with a very young daughter. One year they had no place to go for Christmas so I asked my mother if it was OK to bring them with us to my family’s Christmas gathering; she said yes. Even though it was very short notice, once we got there, my mother had gifts for both the friend and her daughter. (My mother was a regular “yard-saler” and kept a stash of extra gifts in the cellar. Nothing fancy, but greatly appreciated nonetheless.) Boy, was the friend surprised!
