Either that’s a very deep couch, or very skinny parents.

I have been making my own breakfast and lunch since I was 7 and for my sister and brother.
Mom had everything I was allowed to fix within easy reach.
Mom had to go to work.

Oh, come on! BY their ages they should already know how to do the shopping for and make a range of easy from scratch meals like a homemade pasta sauce, or a simple mac and cheese (careful w the grater), or meat loaf w veggies, a number of salads, or even preprep stuff like fish sticks (frozen) with sides of salad, and veggies like limas (frozen and easy on stove top) and stewed tomatoes (canned). I began helping in the kitchen as a pre-schooler and then my parents had me cook almost every Friday meal from the age of eight since our family store was open late on Fridays as well as cooking most Christmas shopping season suppers.

They also should be hemming their own clothing and doing a range of other basic chores to help the family and also help themselves.

Their mom does too much for them and let Jeri slide on doing things for herself and her sister.

Yeah right… Even if you cooked full meals, when you were eight years old, that just sounds completely extreme. Even eleven-year-olds like Teena are usually not mature enough to cook without adult supervision. I started doing that when I was like fourteen, and I don’t see why I should have had to start any sooner.

Good point about the sofa. I just assumed it was a bed, when I first saw it.

At 11 I was responsible for not only getting my brothers and sister home from school but 2 girls and another boy that were friends on my parents kids .
Kindergarten an up to 4th graders home and watching them for several hours until the parents picked them up and mom got home . That included fixing all of us something to eat in a time before the microwave be it kraft mac an cheese or sandwiches or a fave with my siblings pancakes with sausages and eggs not just for breakfast.
Its a recent thing that kids must be protected ay all times parents today would have a total meltdown if kids were to do things we did in the 60’s.
as too why you should start sooner it teaches you to be responsible and self sufficient kids are not nearly as fragile as some seem to think of course not every child is ready at the same age its all about maturity .
