Like I said yesterday, it probably has something to do with the proximity of her room to Jeri’s (Jeri is immune, which is why SHE could smell the candle).

I would say that she was born being unable to smell certain odors. I saw this man that kept wild skunks. He could not smell their pungency. Neither could his son.
