Hah. That is an American Indian name from the Choctaw.

“Oklahoma where the wind comes sweepin’ down the plain,
And the wavin’ wheat, can sure smell sweet,
When the wind comes right behind the rain.”
“Oh, what a beautiful morning, oh what a beautiful day,
I’ve got a wonderful feeling, everythings going my way.”
“Poor Jud is dead, poor Jud Fry is dead.”
    (3 songs from “Oklahoma”)

Still, I can’t see it used today. What do ya call her for short, Okie? Oak? Homa….hehe. Good point, though, Night-G!

I am having a total brain fart here. I know Gordo and his bro’s names have musical roots, but where does “Guy” come from? Also, Gordo’s just a nickname, right? What is his actual name? Can’t think right now….

    “Okla,” for short.

    Sort of rhymes with “Oprah.”

I thought “Boondocks” was well into reruns … sorta like this strip.

    Both are in Classic mode.

At least some parents are actually trying to create new names instead of recycled names.

Disappointed in Barrows for this strip, because it seems very clear from the way it’s worded that she’s never read The Boondocks at all. What’s the comment even supposed to mean? Is he implying that those “guys” would beat him up? Who in the strip would do that, exactly? Not Huey. Not Grandad. Riley MIGHT——IF he weren’t half Gordo’s size!

I think all Barrows cared to know about the strip was that everyone in it looked angry all the time. Doesn’t make this work. At all. Sorry.

Dear JLG, disagree, I can hear Huey mocking parents who would give their child a name like “Oklahoma.” In fact I could imagine Huey writing the two last chapters of “Freakonomics.”

She probably means that the guys on “Boondocks” wouldn’t be caught dead listing to any of the music from Oklahoma, let alone be able to list songs from it.
