Out of curiosity, do vegetarian/vegan dog owners give their dogs meat-based dog food? I’m semi-vegetarian (I eat meat, tofu and veggie burgers now and then) and I had never owned a dog.

While both dogs and cats eat a small amount of vegetation, their diet is mostly meat. I keep wondering how good our mostly grain pet foods are for them.

Lately I’ve been enjoying diced avocados and tomatoes. When it comes to meat, I try to go organic – especially with fowl.

Cast MUST have meat, if they don’t get enough, they can go blind.

If they want to deny their pets meat, they should get a sheep or a goat.

According to a recent study, dogs evolved to digest starch when they became domesticated: http://www.the-scientist.com/?articles.view/articleNo/34095/title/Dogs-Adapted-to-Agriculture/

Yes, but the commercial dog foods with high grain content – especially the dry, pelleted foods like Poncho seems to get – contribute hugely to dog obesity.

Domesticated dogs are scavenging camp followers and seem to do best on a mixed diet of all types of natural food that humans may consume or discard. We have fed all our dogs largely on home-cooked food containing a mix of meat, vegetables, grains (pasta etc.) and pretty much leftover human foods from the refrigerator, pantry etc. Never dry foods.

We currently have dogs 4 and 5 since we set up home here 30 years ago. Our longest-living dog made it to within 3 months of her 16th birthday and our shortest-living was just under 14 years. We have had 2 of the leanest and fittest Labradors in the neighbourhood.

I agree wholeheartedly with you. I do the same.

Google “raw meat diet for dogs”. Or cats. Grains are bad enough for humans, let alone carnivores. If you’re really lucky you’ll find a local farmer who makes pet food from grass fed beef but the odds are against you. Grains get taxpayer subsidies, making industrial food-like products appear to be cheap.

I have 5 cats and none of them will eat raw, commercially produced beef or chicken.

I’m vegetarian but I feed my dogs food with meat, and even get them McDoubles from time to time. They shouldn’t have to be vegetarian too!

Dogs, like humans, can go a day or 2 with food, it is supposed to be good for you – not that I want to. Dogs can also get nutrition from bone meal, so bones are good for them.

Agree with Elsie; he ate the burgers and is really ticked off that he risked trouble for soy/tofu/veggie. I know the feeling.
