In one C&H strip, Calvin was terrified as to know what the librarians would do to him since he had an overdue book. Would they physically torture him? Mom said they’ll charge him only 10¢.

Better just buy the books. After the cost of gas to go there and return them, and the fines you will come out ahead.

Yes, that works out, if your nearest library is 200 miles away and you’re incapable of keeping track of when the books are due.

Well, anyway I’m buying my books at rummage sales. Some are 10 to 25 cents each, and some are even free. I’ve just read “The Glass House” by Jeanette Walls. What a shocking book! The short story selections from 80 years ago are pretty surprising for all the violence and killings, compared to today’s short stories, which tend to be about angst.
