Methinks the plugger sergeant seems scarier than the sergeant on the “Beetle Bailey” comics.

Still not as scary as R E Emery in ‘Full Metal Jacket’.
Supposedly, he was originally hired as a consult, but the actors were so intimidated by him, he was cast as the drill sergeant!

That would be R. Lee Ermey.

Anyone else notice that, for being in the Army, they are dressed like Marines?

The Army switched from the Dress Greens to the Dress Blues a few years ago. The flag isn’t worn on dress uniforms either.

    That’s not a dress uniform.

During Basic, AIT, and BUT at Ft. Hood, I was forced to do a bizillion push-ups because I was from Central Texas and would not say anything against my native state! May GOD forgive Sgt. Simpson for his inhumane acts directed toward me.

I was wondering the same thing. If he loves the Army, then why is the DI wearing a campaign hat like a Marine.

Army DI’s wear campaign hats too. The uniforms are probably the result of Mr. Bookins not having a clear photo of Army recruit + DI to refer to. (If we’re going to be picky, the trainee’s cap looks more like a USMC cover, and the Army issues brown t-shirts, not white). Hey, I still like the comic, and I don’t expect it to be an Army Life documentary!

That’s R. Lee Ermey. And the actor originally chosen wasn’t as convincing and couldn’t take direction well.

I remember R Lee, he was the D.I. next to our platoon. And he was just as scary!

Then it was type casting since Mr. Emery was a drill sergeant!

When I was in the Army (Viet Nam era) the drill sergeants wore campaign style hats. Only those trained as drill sergeants were allowed to wear that style of head gear when assigned as permanent party for training recruits.
