My kids know all the lyrics to “American Pie” due to road trips across Texas.

No, the people in the van are actually singing together. Most of you probably don’t know that XM and 8-tracks and CDs aren’t the only ways to enjoy music.

Singing together is a fine way to go – as long as you can get everyone to agree on a song.
When my parents would take my brother & me on vacations up the coast (summers, 1977-1987), us kids in the back seat would each have our own little cassette decks with headphones, so our music wouldn’t get on each other’s nerves (and we would get on Mom & Dad’s nerves much, much less).

Ashamed now to admit it, but just for the pure challenge of it, my daughter and I once drove from Minneapolis, MN to Ames. IA singing this song for each mile marker on the trip. We commemorated every marker, and we did, again for the challenge of it, sustain the “take one down and pass it arouuuuuuuuuuuuuund” to the next mile marker. Every mile. From Minneapolis to 13th St, Ames, IA. It’s got to be a record of some kind.
