Opal’s old enough to know how to make “kettlecorn.” I had no idea what that was until I asked a young friend.: You put a big pot on the stove, add some oil and popcorn, put a lid on the pan and shake it till the popping stops. In my day we just called it popcorn—and that was the only way to make it! I can remember when JiffyPop was new and my mom refused to spend money on a pieplate and some foil, just so we could watch it puff up. She was about as much fun as Opal.
