Clean-up is under way! Could we possibly be nearing the end of this arc (bearing in mind the remarks attributed to Honorable Master a few days ago about a forthcoming respite for some of the principal characters)?
A clean-up after not one but two story-arcs, I think. I expect resolution of the Frozen Tsunami, and some sort of stabilizing of the relationships Roger has established with Satori, Lena with Drusilla, and Igor with Ma and Pa Egg!
Tolkien used a very similar term in Fellowship of the Ring, which for most of its etymological history meant a large stick of wood. Can’t use the word today, though. Lot of words one can’t use today because they have a radically different meaning than they used to. One doesn’t use one of the synonyms for parsimonious because of its similarity to an insult. A word for happy is off limits now, because an anacronym with the same letters ruined it.
I don’t use the word “yuck” in spoken conversation (used to accentuate something distasteful, such as ice cream and mayonnaise or a cesspool) any more because so many peoples’ hearing is completely shot from listening to loud music while drunk or stoned and they wonder for a second or two just what you’ve just said, knowing you’re not the type to say profanities without a pretty good reason..
Apropos of nothing in particular, but the last two panels tripped an Association in the jackdaw’s nest i call my memory - has anyone here ever heard of “morning glory clouds”?
There’s one on the back of a dime – it’s spelled with one g. The derogatory term is spelled with two. And I’m not afraid to say niggardly. If the less-educated have a problem with that, it’s just that – THEIR problem. I simply refuse to apologize for my erudition. I worked hard for it.
A fag is also the term for a chore that junior boys had to do for senior boys in English boarding schools, especially in the 19th century, in the “fagging” system….
Apropos of nothing in particular, but the last two panels tripped an Association in the jackdaw’s nest i call my memory - has anyone here ever heard of “morning glory clouds”?”
That’s incredible. I’ve never seen or heard of anything like that. What could cause that?
Speaking of forbidden words and such, while the activist nuts decided that the word that for generations simply meant “indian woman” in some dialects was somehow a slur of late and changed some names because of it, somehow the Teton Range in Idaho was missed by the forces of political corectness. It was named by French trappers for… you can guess from the name “Teton”. If the PC crowd renamed it, I wonder what they’d call it?
They still teach the term mammillary for certain rock and mineral textures in geology, but they usually use botryoidal now, even though it’s not quite the same thing.
I love the class the Seminoles have. When the PC jerks wanted to force the team to drop the name, the Tribe basically told them to back off, it’s our team.
My grammar checker once objected to the term French Broad. (It’s a river in North Carolina.) I was writing about the French Broad Electric Membership Cooperative…
Man, what is this, the most popular strip on gocomics?
If it isn’t, it’s gotta be close. The weekend of 9/18/09, we posted 1313 comments on 27 pages. I think that’s the record for the number of Pibgorn comments, and who knows, it might be the record for all of gocomics.
Broad is a little silly for a machine (or person, for that matter) object to as a word, because there are so many non-slang uses for it. Everything from broadcloth to broad vowels.
Sorry … I finally finished writing (well, sort of finished) the advanced learning plans I need for parent-teacher conferences. New system this year that has a stupid degree of redundancy in it.
A fantastic saga of adventure both high and low, of forbidden passion and iambic pentameter, of fays, fools, organists, demons, accordions, heaven, hell and Shakespeare, Pibgorn follows the whims and flights of its eponymous fairy heroine as she plies her conviction that there must be more to life than depositing dew drops on dandelions and sleeping under mushrooms.

Were we in need of sub-orbital demon cleansing?
Is this going to knock Dru’s little collection of stuff out of orbit?

A “fag” is a lower-form student who has to act as a servant to the upperclassmen.

Und so weiter is et cetera in German. Of course, USW may mean something radically different in this case. Only Mr. McEldowney knows.
They never did teach us in Deutschklassen what the equivalent of “ad nauseum” was, as in “etc…etc…ad nauseum”
