To me, Pib does not look horrified, but looks on at something that she knows is neccesary, as she flinches from the blood…
I hope that the action has the desired effect.

Where did the blood come from? Dru is supposedly drained.

  7. waycyber

I think that, just as we see something happening to Satori, something is also happening to Dru. I’m sticking with the idea that there is a transfer of power, or they merge.

Is The Character Previously Known As Satori turning into neo-Drusilla? And, of course, Cashew Jim is quite right: the baby-demon horde supposedly drained Dru dry, so whence comes all that Activated Blood?

What a fascinating episode to appear right after the three-day-long discussion on religion…and why I personally find these two panels so fascinating…

The autumn blót - the blood sacrifice - was (and still is)performed in October, by the followers of the Old Faith of the Aesir, the Norse pantheon. Traditionally, a sacrificial victim was ritually bled on the altar…but drops of the blood also fell on sacred objects brought there and on the participants. Much mead was drunk and the incantation
til árs ok friðar, “for a good year and peace” was pronounced.

Nowadays, the ceremony is mostly just a drinking and feasting party…but the ancient basis of blót was the belief that sacrificial blood had the power to transform and transcend.

There sure do appear to be a heap of transformin’ and transcendin’ going on in those two panels.

And an awful lot of blót

There’s an awful lot of spray from that pucture in panel 1. Seems to me that most sword thrusts like that, with the motion of the thrust paralell to the blade, wouldn’t cause a “normal” wound that would spray like that, especially in the chest or abdomon. Not that I’m speaking from any personal experience here, but wouldn’t that kind of fountain need a major artery or vein to be opened, without the blockage of the weapon remaining in the wound?

Of course this isn’t your “normal” target, nor weapon. This does smack of something more like… Hmmm… an eruption of blood.

Now what brought that image to mind…
OH YEAH, that big volcano in NY…

    Bleah. I hate 3D stuff.

One, it always looks funny (funny peculiar not funny ha-ha)

Have you seen any recent 3D films? They look incredibly realistic. (Well, as realistic as stop-motion or CGI animation can; i look forward to Tim Burton’s Alice in WOnderland live-action 3D…

Two, they always have to remind you it’s 3D by shoving stuff into your face. (Very funny, guys, you made the audience duck, ha ha. Can we get back to the plot now?)

Ummm - Toy Story? Old movie, converted for 3D? That’s a passing phase; the same sort of trickery accompanied sound, colour and widescreen when they were first introduced.

Three, they often rely on the 3D gimmick in lieu of many other important movie qualities. (Get back to the plot? What plot?)

Coraline, the Toy Story films, Monsters vs Aliens (which i haven’t watche yet, but will be watching in 2D as soon as i finish typing on comments.

One of my favourite films. What with the bouncing ball alien, the captain on ice and the surfing in space. Brilliant film.

And two years before Star Wars. And the direct source of the “R2 searches the Death Star computer” sequence (which was done forStar Wars by Dan O’Bannon).

In Suzerain, didn’t killing Dru reset the program? Could Satori be thinking in the same way?

killing anyone other than the Queen (including Satori) reset it.

  46. Fairportfan

Fairportfan said, about 1 month ago

To those wondering what my experience with the Toy Story 3D double feature was:

    Excellent.

The films are, of course, the films. The 3D conversion is brilliantly done, and not excessive or gimmicky.

The Toy Story 2 Opening sequence, showing Buzz Lightyear’s infiltration of Zurg’s stronghold, is incredible in 3D. (And makes me hunger for an equally-well-done conversion of The Incredibles)

I noticed some considerable strobing in objects moving rapidly across the scene, and can’t recall if i spotted similar strobing in the flat releases, and/or whether the 3D conversion aggravated it.

Of course, the 3D conversion is actually almost trivial on a CGI-animated film, since the usual method of making such films is to create full three-dimensional models of characters and sets in the computer, and then to choose a virtual “camera position” and to render what the “camera” sees.

Since you have all the original data stored somewhere, the 3D conversion should mainly consist of rendering everything a second time from a viewpoint about two inches to the left of the original “camera position”.

It’s more than that, of course selecting the picture plane for each shot, and mapping out convergence changes that shift it during the shot, etc., but the essential method should be fairly simple.
