Pib: Nat truly does love Dru. But his kiss doesn’t work. But at least now she’s got some corporeal form as Dinah. What now? Somehow I think Satori has something to do with all this.
Can’t wait to see how HM ties the demon spores, Nat, Satori, Dru’s re-animation, the Eggs, Geoff and Pib all together. Right now there’s a whole lotta loose ends that need tying up!
Good ‘hard-boiled’ here..sentiment trying to hide under tough talk…
And not succeeding. Not at all.
Dashiell Hammett, who perhaps died in the very same room - 77th and Park, remember (Lenox Hill Hospital - where Dru lies ‘dead’)…would have liked this scene, I think.
Interesting the change in angle that Nat is holding Dru on panel 4 of the sketch vs the final. I’m assuming that in the sketch, Nat is holding Dru higher, arching her back more, which accentuates her charlies even more.
Doesn’t Pib’s Baiser de la Fee work by transmuting the injury to her? That may not work if Dru is already dead. That’s why I think Satori has something to do with Dru’s re-animation. There has to be a reason she has now been demonstrated to be a demon.
Skillet Curried Vegetables And Couscous With Almonds
Ingredients
2 Tbsp. butter
2 garlic cloves, minced
2 tsp. minced fresh ginger
4 tsp. curry powder
Dash of cayenne (or more to taste)
1 red bell pepper, cored and cut into ½-inch dice
1 carrot, very thinly sliced
2 C tiny broccoli florets
1 small apple, peeled, cored and cut into ½-inch dice
2 scallions, thinly sliced
½ C frozen peas, thawed
¼ C raisins
⅓ C sliced almonds
2½ C vegetable stock
1½ C couscous
½ tsp salt
Directions
Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the garlic, ginger, curry powder and cayenne and sauté for 1 minute. Stir in red pepper, carrot, broccoli and ¼ C of water. Cover pan and steam vegetables until almost tender, about 3 minutes. Mix in the apple, scallions, peas, raisins and almonds. Pour in stock and bring to a boil. Stir in couscous and salt, cover the pan, and remove it from heat. Let sit for 7 minutes. Remove cover, fluff the couscous with a fork, then cover again. Let sit 2 more minutes before serving. Serves 3 to 4.

@wilorg, @KalahariNight, @fatuncle Re: Finding old books
As a follow-up to my suggestion of using AddAll, I’d also like to recommend that if you’re ever in or near Portland, Oregon, you have got to visit Powell’s. It’s supposed to be the biggest bookstore west of the Mississippi and the second biggest in the U.S. (Supposedly only Strand Books in NYC is larger.)
My favorite way of describing Powell’s is:
You’re familiar with the Barnes & Nobles down at the local mall? Powell’s is about three or four times larger. On every floor. And then there’s the technical bookstore around the corner. And the home and garden bookstore on the east side. And the three other stores, one of which is more-or-less next door to the home and garden store and one of which is in the airport.
Nabuquduriuzhur and Story Teller can probably vouch for my claims about Powell’s. (Does Powell’s still hand out the walking maps of downtown Portland?)
The underground dog fighting ring was busted. A lot of arrest were made that day, including that of the cigar smoking man and his cohorts. The fighting dogs were rounded up and put into cages. It would be decided whether they could be retrained to be human pets again or if they would have to be destroyed.
Deputy Mike Hewitt went over to where Maxie lay. She was still alive, but barely. He put Maxie in his car and took her home to his log cabin. Once home he immediately began to treat her wounds. Once he was finished he made a long leash and tied one end to a tree He would use the chain when he had to.
By the end of the week Maxie found herself strong enough to move around. She despised humans, and now here she was on a leash facing not one but two. “That is one mean dog you got there mike. Maybe you should have had her destroyed.” Mike looked at his friend Ed and shook his head no. “I have faith that I can rehabilitate her into a loving dog.” he said as Ed could only stare at the dog that was growling at them. “Well good luck with that.” Ed said and went into the cabin to relax.
Every day was no easy task for Mike. He would spend as much time with Maxie as he could. Ed was no help at all. he preferred to keep his distance from Maxie, always stating that the dog was Mike’s problem and not his.
One day a miracle happened. Ed got careless while cooking, and the cabin caught on fire. Ed was completely consumed by the smoke and passed out. Maxie somehow was able to break free from her leash and rushed into the house. She spotted Ed and made her way to him. With all her strength she pulled Ed to safety. Mike pulled up in his police car and quickly began to fight the fire. By evening he had managed to put the fire out. He was thankful that there was only a minimum amount of damage. Mike looked at Maxie, and realized that she had just saved Eds life. He went up to her and held out his hand. Maxie came close to him trying to control her growl. She sniffed his hand as he carefully and slowly used his other hand to pet her.
A strange sensation went into her and she began to whine softy. It felt good to her. Somewhere in her memories, she began to remember what loving kindness was. Maxie realized then that her journey was over. She had found love at last.
With the tender loving care that was given to her, Maxie soon recovered from her injuries. She was full of life again and ran in the field chasing rabbits. Ed Went back home to his family and Mike began the repairs on his cabin. Life was good to him, and with Maxie by his side He was happy.
The numinous laying on of hands by Nat has restored nude Dru to decently-clothed Dinah in form, but apparently not had the desired effect of revivification. I suppose either Pibgorn or Satori, or both in concert, will bring that about, but perhaps not before Nat seeks righteous vengeance on the hapless Tomtwit….
Et maitenant, nous attendons le baiser de la Pibbie.
Beautiful story, Ladywolf. I think I missed an episode, but I’ll go back and look for it when I have time. And if I’m willing to look for it, you’re doing GOOD, madamoiselle.
The final stage has yet to be decided, and the battle has yet to begin. God this is getting good. Looks like I’m going to need a tub of popcorn and a large cup of soda, and maybe some more tissues since this comic strip has gotten emotional.
Re 9CWL: Oh, Amos, you silver-tongued devil; you always know just what to say these days. And with just the right timing too. I take my hat off to you!
Oh, lost bookstores of memory! I spent many hours and many dollars in the now-defunct Kroch’s and Brentano’s in downtown Chicago, which once claimed to be the largest bookstore in the U.S. The South Wabash Avenue store was always a stop on my downtown trips in “the good old days,” often coupled with a visit to the nearby Art Institute. Now I do most of my book-buying by mail-order, either direct from publishers or from a few select dealers, such as The David Brown Book Co, affiliated with Oxbow Books in England….

I mean, Sam Spade really hated to send Brigid O’Shaughnessy over; he really had feelings for her.
But you have to pay your debts - to your dead partner, or to society…
