Chapter 6: An Old Enemy Resurfaces - Battle For Domain Rights
Summer came, and with it came blistering hot weather. Kiba and his mate Lupa were in the shade relaxing. They watched their pups wrestle one another. Life was good. Kiba lifted up his head. He noticed that the air smelled foul. He turned his head and saw smoke rising in the distance. His instincts told him that danger was coming. Kiba gathered up his family and his pack. It was time to move to higher ground where they would be safe. Kiba found a trail and led his family and his pack on it. The trail led upwards into the mountainous range. Here they would be safe from the fire.
As Kiba and his pack made their way up the trail to safety, they had to stop short. An old enemy of Kiba was blocking the pathway to safety. The enemy was Krause. He stood his ground growling and snarling at Kiba. A fight to the death challenge was made. One on one, the winner gets the domain and the loser dies. in front of his pack.
The two leaders circled each other, both growling menacing at each other. Then the clash began. They locked jaws with each other. Both trying to get at the others throat. Kiba drew first blood as he ripped open Krause’s shoulder blade. Instant payback Kiba decided. Krause was infuriated. He lunged madly at Kiba. Kiba was the stronger of the two and he showed it. Krause could only manage to get in a few bites and scratches. No matter what Krause tried he could not get Kiba down. Kiba remembered all those times that Krause tormented him. The slashing attacks by both wolves continued.
Krause finally seized the advantage as he jumped on Kiba’s back and went for his neck. Kiba managed to shake Krause off of him and initiated an attack of his own. Kiba lunged in and got a hold of Krause by the back leg before Krause could recover. Kiba bit into the hind leg hard and heard the leg bone crunch from his teeth. He did not allow Krause to get up. Kiba jumped on Krause and found the neck. Kiba bit in and felt the warm gush of blood. The Fight was over. Krause had a few death twitches then lay still. He was dead. The domain belong to Kiba now. Krause’s old pack joined in with Kiba’s pack and they all made their way to safety.
Kiba and his mate would go on and rule the domain for many years. They would have lots of children expanding the wolf population. Away from the threat of mankind Kiba, his family, and his pack lived happily ever after.
I don’t think that it’s a ruse Pib. If Dru lives, she’s going to need time to recover from all that blood lost. And with all these demons around, you all better be prepared to fight for your lives.
Soft! What light thru yonder window breaks? If I don’t hustle off to bed, ‘twill be the dawn, and I, I, shall have no mojo to strut, nor fret, nor nothin’.
In a sense, our chains are being yanked today. Of course Dru appears to be dead, and for sure it’s happened before; the humorous panel 5 is just a moment of levity before getting down to serious business. The question is not whether Dru will be revivified but how, and by whom?
None of the three (except Oognat, the teeniest bit) is giving a ‘proper’ reaction. This ‘hard-boiled’ insensitivity has been a hallmark of Pibgorn (and Geoff, too, although not to the same extent) since the beginning of this story-arc.
Nudging the body with his foot? This is his cuurent lover. Pibgorn just assuming it’s a ruse?
I’ve been saying it ever since Pib boinked Nat and told him it meant nothing to her…the three main characters have been behaving badly, not like themselves. In Dru’s case, we now know more or less why…but what’s up with Pib abd Geoff?
One clue (I stubbornly maintain): At the moment, assuming Dru remains in the same spatial position she was in when the whole volcanic fever eruption began…she’s somewhere in the hospital where Dashiell Hammett died…
Do I repeat myself?
Was Pope Innocent III kind of a mean guy?

I thought for a second that Fleurriewas Mary, the first time she turned up.
I think that, like it always seems to be the same salesgirl waiting on Juliette or Edda when they’re looking at clothing, Mary and Fleurrie are both examples of a semi-stock character Brooke has developed in this case, the cute wholesome brunette.

Is a demon considered a living entity that would exhibit life signs? Other than breathing at the hospital, has Dru ever exhibited life signs while she was “alive?”
@bmonk *said, about 9 hours ago^
@waycyber, yes, those are what we are called to do. However, we are still sinners, and all fall short of the ideal.
@wilorgsaid, about 8 hours ago I hate to say this (and I really do hate saying this), but to non-Christians, your religion appears to be steeped in blood, violence and intolerance.
I agree with both of you. We all fall short, but if we do not have a desire to follow Christ’s teachings we cannot claim to be Christian. There have been many false apostles, false teachers, who have corrupted the Gospel for their own ends. But the original message remains. Jesus said do not resist the evil man. That means a Christian gives up the right of self defence. Jesus said love your enemy. You cannot do that while holding a weapon. Jesus said that many will call him Lord but will not enter the Kingdom of Heaven because they did not obey God. We have received God’s forgiveness, so we must forgive others. We have received God’s mercy, so we must be merciful to others. We have received God’s love, so we must love all others.
Yes, humina-humina is definitely movement, but is it what we would normally consider as human life signs? I guess I was wondering if Dru ever had all of the other characteristics we typically associate with human life signs: pulse, respiration, warmth, pupils that respond to light, brain activity, etc.
Geoff’s statement about Dru’s “total absence of life signs” got me thinking about how many life signs a “normal” demon would have.
Hello, dear friends. ‘Tis I, back from the fringes of reality. Had a killer time ending the school term (got straight C’s…not happy, but it *is* passing) and have been working very hard on my game website which i was hoping to have launched by now. Still working on it. Had a bout of the congestive heart thing which put me in the horse-piddle for a few days (the food sucked!) and almost lost my soul to an online game, but I am back and I see the squirrels have been busy. Will have to see if I can keep them in line. That should be about as easy as herding cats! I am avoiding burying myself in this last weekend’s posts…only so many hours in the day, after all. I have been keeping up with the strip and events have become most interesting. I look forward to further developments and, of course, OTC comments regarding same.
How many of y’all follow “Looking For Group?” Another great strip!
In the short few weeks I have been following the strip, I have seen Dru’ eyes dilate - albeit in response to seeing herself en gravis. She definately thinks, but that does not conclusively imply having “brain activity”. She bleeds, thus implying something pumping the blood, thus implying a pulse. I may be mistaken, but it apears that succubi-type demons, being humanoid in form, are also humanoid internaly as well
I was thinking Eric Frank Russell as well. (Although I’m sure the story isn’t Wasp.) I went through my collection of his stuff and didn’t find it. Might be worth a second pass.
Re-reading Eric Frank Russell is almost always worthwhile, even if you’re not looking for a specific story.
Not only did your description start out by reminding me of Wasp, but it also sort of recalled “Plus X” (The Space Willies).
Wasp, BTW, was partly inspired by Russell’s experiences in British Intelligence during WW2, part of which involved sending agents who had lived a good part of their lives in Japan and could pass for Japanese in as saboteurs, etc.
“I Am Nothing” is one of the most heart-wrenching stories i have ever read.
I am nothing and nobody.
My house went bang!
My cat was stuck to the wall.
I tried to pull her off.
They wouldn’t let me.
I am nothing and nobody.
I guess it’s my turn to add something here. This whole story arc has been pretty much about Dru, if she dies now, will it be for nothing. The Honorable Master has yet to reveal to us what Dru is holding back. Or has he revealed a little bit to us already and we overlooked it.
I look forward to seeing what piece of the puzzle he’ll show us next.
A fantastic saga of adventure both high and low, of forbidden passion and iambic pentameter, of fays, fools, organists, demons, accordions, heaven, hell and Shakespeare, Pibgorn follows the whims and flights of its eponymous fairy heroine as she plies her conviction that there must be more to life than depositing dew drops on dandelions and sleeping under mushrooms.

Somethings up – Oog has red eyes. When did that happen?

I agree with you, however much toungue-in-cheek my postings may be.
PS. I see where your daughter gets her intelligence and inquisitiveness from. Good work sir!
