    WASTELAND

    Part Four
    Shades

The demon ran holding me in a painful vice - grip tight hold. All around us I could hear the loud wailing cries of the shades.

It was in the late night hours now. The wind was chilly, and I could feel goosebumps on my arms. ” Head for the lake, we’ll be safe if they can’t track us ” . said I hoping that I was right.

We made it to the lake and waded in to a bank with tall brush, perfect for hiding. we watched as the shades and their awful wailing cries passed us by. Finally! despite the cold chill of the lake, I got up the nerve to ask my demon friend about the shades.

” They are the spirits of the undead, forced to serve the Dark Lord for all eternity, and it appears that they are after you, my mortal friend “. The demon said, as we quietly made are way out of the freezing water.

A thick fog was beginning to settle in now. Visibility was now impossible for both me and the demon to see all around, much less each other. ” Hold on to my hand, and don’t let go, no matter what happens “. He said to me.

As we began to walk, we again could hear the wailing cries of the shades as they were coming closer.
” Stand your ground, and remain still “. The demon said to me and continued, ” Remember what Tara said to you, have faith and it will protect you, and guide you “.

The shades circled us now. I don’t know about the demon, but I was scared for my life. ” Pitiful human, you can not hide from us, we hear your heartbeat and smell your
fear “. The shades all said in their mocking voices.

They came at us then. The demon began slashing at them with his claws, and I, slashing at them with only my dagger.

The situation was looking grim for us. There was just no way we could get rid of these ghostly shades. I let go of the demons hand, even though I wasn’t supposed to and held my necklace with the cross. Have faith Tara had told me.

Suddenly! lightning began to flash all around us. The shades were the ones that were terrified this time. I could hear their wailing cries of pain as each one was struck by the lightning and vanished.

As the fog began to clear up now, I could see a shadow with wings emerging. ” Hello, big brother “. said the figure in the fog, to the demon who was as surprised as I was.

The figure stepped out of the fog revealing to us to be a Succubus, a female demon, and the little sister of my demon friend. ” Kiri ” ! Said the demon, as she walked over to us. TO BE CONTINUED

Before I do go , I decided earlier today while I was having fun, was what character should I introduce to my readers. Then I went into a deep thought period where my creative abilities lie, and came up with the idea of The demon having a little sister. So a succubus would come in to my story.

    High Wire

Friar James watched his novice, Simon, who was stomping and banging and clattering and showing all the signs of adolescent frustration.

    “What troubles you, Simon?”

    “I want to be free.”

    “And what is freedom?”

“Being able to do whatever I like. I’m tired of study, and chores, and lessons.”

    “Come with me, then.”

Friar James took Simon to the Big Top of a circus, where he indicated the high wire act that was practising.

    “Are they free?”

“Yes. Look how they twist and somersault.”

“Do you see their practice harnesses?”

    “Yes.”

“Do you see the net below them?”

    “Yes.”

“That is why they can be free to perform on the high wire. If they slip, the harness protects them. If the harness breaks, the net protects them.”

“But they do not use a harness when they perform in front of an audience.”

“Nevertheless, what they do without the harness is because they have pratcised with one. And there is still the net. So you see, when you yearn for freedom, remember that you cannot truly be free unless you recognise hazards and plan for them.”

“But if those high wire performers wanted to avoid hazards, they would not be up there in the first place.”

“A life worth living is full of hazards. To avoid them all, a person would have to avoid life. And that in itself is a hazard. To learn how to deal with hazards is to be confident and free of fear. So we must be willing to listen to those that have walked the path before us. What you perceive as limits to your freedom are the very things that make you free.”

@Mattimeomeg I like to make peach jam with some clove in it.
Of course there is the obvious peach cobbler.
When I used to bottle, I would pack the peaches in pureed peach instead of water or syrup… water leaches the flavor, and syrup ruins it to my way of thinking… peach puree is perfect… all perfectly peach flavored!
I just got a deal on a box of bing cherries…$5 a box which holds 18 pounds… they are all now drying for later in the year when cherries are out of season… must remember to do this also with cranberries!
