This day’s page seems to mark a taking-of-a-breath by Honorable Master, who was at San Diego Comics Convention with the Snark. Old Wolf says he dined with them, and Jennifer Babcock (C’est la Vie) talks in her blog of meeting them and being impressed http://tinyurl.com/hqx52
@KalahariNight:** The WOAW folks are pretty low-key, usually. They joke among themselves and threaten, but I don’t think they’ve actually inducted any one in the Order lately. And the Grand Puntiff moved out of kingdom for work last month, bleeep it. She was a wonderful Dame.
Our Period Police aren’t active at all, either. Thank goodness. They just provide good examples for us slackers.
You were in Atlantia? One of the scribes in the Barony of Windmaster’s Hill just found out that Walmart has used one of his scrolls on a t-shirt that they sell. He’s looking into legal action. Or at least payment for their theft.
waycyber, nothing in the sketch says “portal!”, but the finished art swirls (lower left quadrant, mainly) could express the Way she is passing through back to the Game, I suppose….
Was never a member, but used to enjoy seeing the local SCA gang doing their thing outdoors when I passed by, back in Ohio…. Sometimes it looked painful….
@Sisyphos: sometimes the SCA IS painful. That’s why I’m a chirurgeon (first aider) for them. And it’s time I stopped reading these addictive comments (yeah, I can stop ANY time I want!) and wrote the quarterly report that’s due this week.
Okay, totally off subject, but I need help! Several of the couch members have announced they are “foodies”, so now I need some advice and recipes.
Everyone knows I live in China. Here is the problem: It’s REALLY hard to get the right ingredients for a lot of things, including pasta sauce. There is NO fresh basil here at all, the only basil I can get is the dried stuff (I know, gag, but it’s what I have) or oregano or canned tomatoes. I can get tomato paste, garlic, and most other basic spices. So any ideas?
But it is only oh-seven-hundred hours AM in the morning in the UK. I am just getting ready to go to work! Ah well, when I’m getting ready for bed, you lot will be just starting on your Monday. You know what they say, what goes aroubd comes around.
Has anyone else heard about a live action Peanuts film? I know there were some movies in the past, but they were cartoons. Is Peanuts popular enough? Would it lose something if it was made more up to date?
Finally made it onto Page One of comments. I’m delighted to be amid the leaders of the OTC. May I simply say thank you for the hospitality, and wit, and caring this group shows to all and sundry. And weekdays, too. You see, it’s possible to be not only a Pibfan, but also a Pibfanfan.
ejcapulet, a lot depends on your taste in paste sauce. For my part, I like mine very spicy, so I usually start with a jar of commercial pasta sauce (I favor Barilla, any variety/flavor), then add a jar or can of beanless chile, and go around my spice shelf: garlic powder, pepper, minced onions, celery salt, basil, oregano; from the fridge come grated Parmesan cheese and Worcestershire sauce. I prefer angel hair (capellini). The result is hot and tasty.
Just for a laugh, I plugged in my graphics tablet(WACOM Bamboo Fun) and tried to sign my name in the comments block. Obviously, it didn’t work. Would have been cool if it did.
G’Nite all!
I still haven’t figured out enough of this arc to post a summary over at the tribute page. And, it’s been long enough that I’ll have to fake it. Maybe I’ll summarize The Mayor of Casterbridge and hope nobody notices the difference between one kind of fatalistic chaos and another…
@ejcapulet It’s rough when you can’t get ingredients. I lived in Austria in the 70’s and there were some things you just couldn’t get at all. One option is to do a nice carbonara - if you can’t get pecorino, romano will do, or just use a bit more parmesan - I’m hoping everything on the list is available to you…
Spaghetti alla Carbonara
For 4 people
400 g spaghetti
100 g smoked bacon in cubes
3 eggs
2 spoons grated Parmesan
2 spoons grated Pecorino (a cheese made with ewe milk; it is a bit stronger than Parmesan)
1 clove garlic
salt, pepper
extra virgin olive oil
In a large frying pan, fry the bacon and the garlic in three spoons of olive oil, then remove the garlic. Cook the spaghetti. When the spaghetti is ‘al dente’ drain it, put it in the frying pan with the bacon and fry it for a few minutes, then turn the heat off. (If cooking with electric stove, remove from burner). Meanwhile put the yolks of the three eggs in a bowl and beat them with some salt and pepper, 1 spoon of grated Parmesan and 1 spoon of grated Pecorino. Put this sauce in the pan and mix well so that the spaghetti is covered with the cream. Add the rest of the grated cheese, mix well and… buon appetito!
Lots of pepper, coarsly ground. And the closest thing to panchetta (what they use around Naples) is diced up country ham. It’s a bit saltier, but you can rinse or soak it a bit to tame that down, and don’t add extra salt. I find the cheese and the ham make it plenty salty enough. We like to get the garlic really brown and then just eat it on the side. Spagetti alla Carabonara is truely a food of the gods.
Has anyone else heard about a live action Peanuts film?
Oh lordie, I hope not.
There are certain trends in Hollywood that are mildly annoying, and making (what they hope will be) a blockbuster movie out every comic they can find is among them.
Coz you know they won’t be able to just leave it alone, and Schultz is no longer with us to enforce any sort of purity.
They’ll have to do Lucy’s backstory, why she’s always yanking the football, Charlie Brown’s backstory, why he always feels like such a loser, Linus’ backstory, why he always carries that blanker around, Snoopy’s backstory, why he walks on two legs instead of four. Etc. etc. etc. ad nauseum.
Then the plot is going to have revolve around saving the world so they can add car chases and action and explosions.
You know it will be nothing like the Peanuts strip we all knew and loved. It might even make a zillion bucks, but really, who cares?
Does no one in Hollywood have a thought that’s even remotely original anymore?
JoeM – Looks like a transition to somewhere/who/what/thing to me. Tomorrow could show what the weeks local/subject could be. I am still betting on #5. yep. That recent set of articles in the UK online papers about the lack of dentists and the 100,000+ people last year that had to have all their teeth surgically removed in the emergency room makes me thankful I’m here. Our dentists are extremely expensive, but at least we have them. I’d hate to live in western Europe and have to go to the former East Bloc of all places to have my teeth done, like many in desperation now have to do.

From Donna’s and my kitchen comes this summer goodie:
Sweet Red Pepper Soup… In a large pot (such as for boiling pasta), combine three large seeded sliced red peppers, a few garlic cloves and two large sliced onions with half a stick of butter/margarine/any butter-poseur.
Saute this for 20-25 minutes over medium heat until well softened. Add more butter if needed.
Add a large diced-up potato, 28 to 32 oz of chicken or veggie stock (depending on whether you measure in cups or those little 14-oz cans), some fresh chopped parsley, a dash of dried or fresh dill, and some salt and pepper.
Bring it to a simmer and cook until potatoes are done, about 15 minutes (covered).
Remove from heat, and working in two batches, run it through a standard blender, pureeing until smooth.
Return it to the pot, add the juice of half a lemon, and about 1/4 cup of light cream or half-and-half.
Season to taste, garnish with chives before serving.
We steal a little cup of this while it’s hot, but this is better after it’s cooled off and chilled in the fridge.
In addition to the butter, you can also throw in a little schmaltz (chicken fat), we always have some on hand for making our world-class knishes.
Enjoy!

Sheesh I’ve got a dozen basil plants in my garden one of the few things that the deer and bunnies don’t eat, that and the hot peppers! I’d send you one if I could!
The plot is now moving, it seems. Not that the slower pace really bothered me all that much; half the fun is the artwork and trying to anticipate what happens next.
Dru was tossed off the game show, if you recall. She was going to be seen in Hell. Being a demon, that shouldn’t bother her too awfully much. Not to mention we all know she has a way of avoiding such torments anyway.
I’m pretty sure Nat misses a couple days of bangagong, unbridled humma-humma. He can probably use the time to rebuild from catching Dru/Dinah in that last fall. However, that fall seems to be the mind-meld that gives Dru/Dinah the information she needs… We’ll see.
So is this a continuation of the lightning that affected Dru last time we saw her at the game show being “punished” for her wrong answer or is this something else related to her transition to Nat’s cliff?
A fantastic saga of adventure both high and low, of forbidden passion and iambic pentameter, of fays, fools, organists, demons, accordions, heaven, hell and Shakespeare, Pibgorn follows the whims and flights of its eponymous fairy heroine as she plies her conviction that there must be more to life than depositing dew drops on dandelions and sleeping under mushrooms.
