So…
Is this the melted glacier that should’ve barred their way?
The ocean?
The set of “The Titanic”?
Love the yellow to blue fade… and now we know why the bricks in the road lost their definition, they were all washed up. Like Nat is and like the girls’ brains are.

Sisyphos said, 5 months ago
How about this:
Nat is right about being back at the beginning, but the beginning isn’t 77th and Park; it’s the now-Unfrozen Tsunami, the Hellmouth. Dinah may (or may not) still recall his existence as the Powers below reclaim a fellow-demon, but the two fairies now have no mental image of him: their minds are tabulae rasae, blank slates. The Evil Force is splintering as much as it can the Anti-Armageddon Alliance.
It’s time for Geoff and swift, sure Accordion Justice!

So…
The protagonist has been seen as the big smokey face on 6/8 and the hand of smoke that grabbed Oognat.
And now things as solid as a road are melting away underfoot. A connection??
UncaAlby said, 5 months ago

I t’ink you must mean antagonist
The protagonist is the good guy
paciii

I was thinking more along lines of the main mover and shaker of the events that are unfolding. Whether he is a good guy or not is yet to be determined (although smacking Dru around and freezing Geoff do seem rather “not good” things to do…) He has pulled in others to help Dru in her coma state. Maybe he’s just a big softy, an air-head… we’ll see as things continue to unfold.

Sisyphos said, 5 months ago
paciii, yes, indeed, solid yellow brick road abruptly morphs into cool blue water–as Whatever is giving shape to the Dreamscape releases one form for another, in accord with its Grand Design….–Which I suspect is evil, not good, and which our Heroines Three will, with the eventual aid of Geoff, the Sir Galahad (or, more accurately, Sir Percival) of this Pibverse, confront and vanquish, though not without harrowing danger along the way!

Interesting to note, that Dru/Dinah, who says she’s “the sexy one”, is, other than the color red, the most conservatively dressed of the three ladies.

The Hurfl
Peter lived with his Grandmother in a small cottage between a river and a field. At the far side of the field was the dark, dark forest.
Every day, Peter would have to cross the field to the dark, dark forest to collect wood for the fire. Every day, just before he left, his Grandmother told him “Remember, you must be out of the dark, dark forest before the Sun sets or the Hurfl will get you.”
Peter had always managed to get out of the dark, dark forest before sunset, so after a while he thought “There’s no Hurfl, it’s just a story my Grandmother made up to make sure I’m back home in time.”
As the days got shorter and colder, Peter needed to get more and more wood for the fire. Each day took him deeper and deeper into the dark, dark forest.
So it was that, one day, Peter was still in the dark, dark forest after the Sun set. As night fell, the dark, dark forest looked less and less familiar. Peter tried to remember the way home, but was getting more and more lost.
Suddenly he heard a “snap!” He spun round, but saw nothing. Quietly, creeping along, he made his way through the dark, dark forest.
After a while, he relaxed. It must have been his imagination. There’s no Hurfl. Then he heard another “Snap!” He spun, and thought he saw a black shape shoot behind a tree not far away from him.
Fear caught him. His heart began to pound loudly in his ears. He looked around and saw what looked like a familiar boulder. He ran with all his might. Then he heard it. Heavy footsteps behind him, louder than his heartbeat.
It was the Hurfl! And it was after Peter!
Peter dodged one way, then another, weaving a crazy path between the trees.
Still he heard the footsteps behind him, sounding like a horse in full gallop. And now, he began to hear the breathing. Rough, fast breathing, with a rumble to it like some mighty cat.
He ran and ran. Up ahead he thought he saw the light of his Grandmother’s cottage the other side of the field. He ran further, getting closer and closer to the field.
Just as he was about a hundred feet away, he tripped on an old tree root and fell, tumbling, along the floor of the dark, dark forest.
The footsteps got closer. The breathing got nearer and slowed. Peter screwed up his eyes and waited for his fate. He smelt something like wet fur. He felt hot, damp breath on his neck. Felt a huge, fur covered claw land heavily on his shoulder. Then he heard the voice. It sounded as if it came from the deepest depths of the pit of destruction. In slow, measured tones it said:
“Tag, you’re it!”

Hi … new to commenting here, even though I’ve been following this strip since it first appeared on the other website.
Hopefully I’ll have enough to say that you’ll see more of me … the crew posting here seems pretty cool. Anyway …
This is not a dumb act, I really don’t know. Who’s Diane and what is 9CL?

Brooke McEldowney, who draws this strip, also draws one called “9 Chickweed Lane”. Diane is a character from that strip who has been in the spotlight the past week. You can see it at http://comics.com/9chickweedlane/.

I am guilt ridden tonight. Dad I don’t know what time or when you’ll log in, but as I was unpacking the boxes I notice a long skinny box that I have not seen before, I know that I should have called you up from work and asked you about it but instead my curiosity clouded my judgement, so I opened up the box and to my surprise pulled out a long sword. The blade is very sharp and has a curve. I didn’t know what kind of sword it was so I did some research on the internet and found out that it it a samurai katana sword. How come you never showed me this sword before and how did you get it. any ways I guess i’ll wait for you to punish me for showing bad judgement in my decision.

Welcome!! pull up a chunk of couch!!
9CwL is explained above.
To set your avatar, Click your name up where it says “you’re signed in as” On the screen that opens, over at the left it has an “edit profile” link. In the edit profile screen there’s a link in the middle to browse around your PC and pick a graphic to upload as your avatar.
Setting a value in the “first name” box will change what name will appear along with your posts. i.e. my login is not “paciii”, my “first name” is.

Check out the boilerplate usually seen as one of the first comments each day. For some reason we don’t have it today, so check out yesterday’s (6/24/09) strip. fear-ciuil has the boilerplate in his comment, and it will answer many of your questions.

BikeNBoatN, there seems to be an Inverse Sexiness Dress Code at play here. The sexier a character (Dinah), the more modest the raiment, while the relatively innocent (Teau-Teau) bares more flesh…. Dunno why that should be. I’ll just have to ponder it more closely, scrutinize more minutely, study in greater detail….

Teau-Teau not only bares more flesh, her “painted-on” skin-tight attire leaves very little to the imagination. Not that I mind, of course……
Man, I just love the way Brooke can draw the female form.

Well, the boilerplate is late, so I did a copy-n-paste, thereby sacrificing my marvelous THIRD posting of the night.
I didn’t add the bolding etc. coz I’m too lazy.
Maybe later I’ll repost my original joke which was *so* incredibly funny, xcept now I don’t remember what it was.

Right, I am so on the couch tonight! What’s wrong with the faries? What’s with the road? Are we about to have an underwater scene?
Marg, your avatar today is way better. Very nice.
Nice to see you again, UncaAlby. In case I missed it, (do I dare ask) how is Mrs. Unc doing?
azrach, welcome to the couch, nibbles are on the sideboard, the pool in the back is always open, and you might not want to antagonize the squirrels.

I sure hope that Nat is a good swimmer. I wonder if something will grab him while he’s under water.
ladywolf I meant for you to find the box. I guess I should have left you a note (My bad, sorry) The sword was a gift for me from a Japanese friend of mine that i’ve known since high school. I’ve never told you before because you were to young and I didn’t want you to get hurt. But now you’re seventeen and I have chosen to pass it on down to you. I know that I can entrust it to you. Keep it clean and keep it safe. The sword in the wrong hands is a tool of destruction. But in the right hand it is a sight to behold. That is what was told to me, now it was told to you. You must promise me never to use it.

Out of sight, out of mind?
I always understood the protagonist as the main character, regardless of moral values and the antagonist is the one who opposes the protagonist. In other words, the protagonist may be a bad fellow.

@aerwalt – Thanks for the Marine story. My Dad is a once/always Marine, also a vet of WWII in the Pacific. Semper Fi.
If we’re numbering the cushions/sections, dibs on 42.
Dru, Pib, Oog and Nat must be in a dream, what with the mutable landscape, the surreal scene shifts, the dream logic, etc. The question has been, and remains, whose dream?
Something about the artwork of this arc keeps reminding me of Rene Magritte, but I’m durned if I know what. Hmmmmm. Ceci n’est pas une pipe…
And while we’re on the subject, the two most important things to remember about surrealism are frogs, power tools and the Lincoln Memorial. Just thought I’d pass that along.

That’s a great Idea, number the couch sections…
17, 34, 1, 7, 42, 9, 534432, 7223 (that’s mine, if no else has already claimed it…), 2, 432, Pi, 90210, 3+7i (gotta have some imaginary numbers), 4077(that’s for medical personel), 11, wait, did I miss one???
This escher numbering system is hard to get used to…
p.s. thanks for the boilerplate, UncaA
Saskfan said, 4 months ago
Okay, Nat takes a step, the ladies don’t see him go splash, and Dru’s the only one who remembers him. How can the others lose the memory so fast? Out of sight, out of mind, indeed.
If we’re claiming portions of the Escherian couch, I’ll reserve the one numbered pi for my Youngest Son, please. I will take the section numbered c, since I hope to understand Mr. Einstein’s musings some fine day.
Oatmeal is ready, and there’s toast with Fire and Ice Wine jelly, from a craft market in Victoria, BC. Also tea, of course. Anyone else fancy a cup of Lady Grey?
