So, what does Roger have in mind? Instead of saying, okay, let’s blow this bait shack to the whole crew, he’s going off on his own?
Is Roger, pure evil????
He made the first move to meet Spitcock. Went up to him and asked about his missing sister.
I don’t trust Roger.
Fearc,
Tell’s you how much I know about languages!
Need sleep.
A manana!

I don’t think Roger is pure evil–Dru sensed Lena’s evil, but not from Roger. I think Roger thinks he’s dashing off to confront Spitcock.
.
Or something.

I don’t trust Lena - I suspect by panel 6 she is re-thinking her hesitancy in panel 4. Advice to Geoff - run, run like the chill winter breeze…

Fearciuil, re-posting here in case you don’t go back to yesterday’s threads.
“Ciuil” is Scots Gaelic… “Ceol” is Irish Gaelic.
I’d say we needed Luciano right about now, but he’s still playing Drosophila Kong…

Okay. It looks as if they all got halfway between Real World an Suzerain; i suspect that Roger is going back to the game for Satori.
It also looks to me as if Roger, personally, has some sort of moderating influence on the game.
That is, when he’s present Satori and Lena are able to function (more or less) as independent characters, not as automata.
Somehow, Roger is the equivalent of a cheat code in an MMORPG.

Poor Geoff, stuck between Inky and Lena - what a choice. I’d go with Inky, but then again, I’m female.

Oh great. “Who are you?” “Who are you?”
WHO! WHO! I’M A FRIKKIN OWL I AM!
I sure hope Roger knows what he’s doing. Were it me, I think I’d like some sort of quick introductions before leaving in such a huff.
Poor Pib. She’s sorely in need of a recharge. I wonder what Lena is going to do when she recognizes the babe who gave her that right cross some time ago?
UncaAlby said, about 1 year ago
Check it out, last panel: One eyebrow goes down, “Evil Lena”, the other eyebrow goes up, “Innocent Lena”. It’s even more pronounced in the sketch.
After all this, the poor child is still conflicted! … or … maybe she’s finally conflicted!!
Mikkail

Lena says, “What are you?” - not “Who”. Does she recognise that the other characters she has (presumably) been interacting with for the last 17 years are not “real”?
JodieKay said, about 1 year ago
So, will Lena go back to being a child when she crosses back into reality? That smile in the last panel looks very similar to the evil sister grins she had as a kid. But then, “I play an organ” can have a rather naughty meaning ;) I’m also wondering why everyone didn’t just jump through the portal–wouldn’t Roger have a better chance of facing Spitcock (if that’s what he’s going to do) with more people to help him fight?

Roger has no clue what awaits him on the other side – but *we* happen to know that
nobody awaits him, because we saw the Spitcock/Demon get slurped up into Dru’s dream. Roger probably expects to confront a human Spitcock, and will demand that he “do something” about their situation.
So the question we’ll need to wait and see is, what will Roger do when he finds nobody around – except, of course, for a 37 thousand metric ton housefly –

methinks Satori is on this side of the portal. I wonder if Roger is going to modify the program. How could he confront Spitcock since the latter is a demon? Now if he had Geoff’s accordian that be a different story, wouldn’t it?

Roger doesn’t know that; he was in-game when Inky appeared.

Just to be petty - it seems that everyone entering the game fell from a pretty good height - so unless the portal is only five feet off the ground, it seems Roger wouldn’t be able to leap back through it.
Bucky Katt
said,
And wouldn’t he have pulled Lena with him? After all, retrieving her is the whole reason he entered the game to begin with.
UncaAlby said, about 1 year ago
Roger not only does not know that Spitcock is a demon, he does not know that said demon is now back in the game with Drusilla!
Unless that Salvation Army guy is there trying to scrounge up some clothes, Roger will be returning to a completely empty lab.

Except, of course, for Dru, who is still hooked up as the power source. : )
UncaAlby said, about 1 year ago
I suppose Roger went by himself because he doesn’t want his sister to come back to the “real” world as a 25 year old, plasma-shooting sex-demon. He’s probably going to look for Spitcock to try to get him to make things right.
Little does he know that his errand will be fruitless! And probably vegetable-less as well.

You made me curious, so I just went and looked again. It looks more like they were thrown through the portal than fell: Lena’s clearly standing on the ground. I think Mr. McE just cut to a high-angle shot in that panel.
.
And with that, buenos noches.

johndrake said, about 1 year ago
ah but Roger knows that this program is Spitcock’s doing and Roger ought to deduce that Spitcock is something other than an old curmudgeon of a professor, no?
Bucky Katt

Fearc - Dru clearly fell from a great height, although she and Pib entered the game via a different mechanism from the others.
And wouldn’t you think Lena would recognize the red-headed chick with the wings? Seems that sort of thing would make an impression.

Strip is 23 minutes old, and has 32 comments already (probably more by time I’ve finished this). And it’s 8:23 am here and I’m barely awake enough to read the strip itself. Now that is a tough start to the day. Good morning :)
Edit: Ok, so my working day startet just as most or all of you went to sleep. I ought to be used to this by now :-þ

I think Lena said “What are you” rather than “who are you” because it gave Geoff the opportunity to reply with that great line about what he does, rather than who he is. It is, after all, a cartoon. The author can make the question fit the answer if he wants :-).
I’d say Roger went through just to check to make sure it was safe. He may just turn around and hop back in to get Lena in his time, but have it be a couple days in Suzerain.
Interesting point about Lena’s smile morphing back into her child self. I think she will be restored to her child self when she gets back. I don’t see how it could be any other way to end the story.

Good point, yankeeharp6 - hadn’t thought of that. I do hope, though, that her child self remembers she was rescued by big brother.
And the thought just occurred to me - Is it a bird? is it a plane? No, it’s ROGER!!!

Either Roger wants Geoff to stay put in order to keep the portal open or to keep on eye on Lena. Big mistake, Bro, especially with that evil smile Lena has in the last panel. I wonder if she really is a succubus that has finally bloomed? She can shoot plasma bolts, at least in the game.

In earlier strips Lena as queen was alluring…But, my God, now look at that smile….that is something to bring on nightmares…
DriverEd said, about 1 year ago
Lena’s question “what are you” has a much simpler interpretation. When a child comes to your door on Halloween dressed in some kind of costume, you might ask the same question. I think it’s in that sense that she’s asking.
Obviously she doesn’t recognize salvation when she sees it.

Somehow, i hear Charles Boyer or Adolph Menjou as the desk clerk…

I am amazed at Goeff. He seems to get all the women, good and/or bad: Pibgorn, Drusilla, and now Lena. (When she was good she was very very good, and when she was bad, she was terriffic!). I think Oognat was in line for the Organ-ist at Pib’s behest, back a while ago.
Watching Roger digitize himself through the portal makes me think that he may be headed for the machine in his room. Once there, he can edit the code for Suzerain making the game more deterministic than stochastic.
Stochastic is generally more fun, but as Roger said to Lena, “You know, it’s twerps like you who take all the fun out of violence and bloodshed as computer entertainment.” So, I think Roger may take control of the game and point it toward a conclusion (maybe within the next year, if we should be so fortunate).
Of course, what he does with the game is totally open to speculation.
In the mean time, I’ll continue to admire and envy Geoff’s unassuming ability with women.

For those wondering about Liberty Meadows, Frank Cho stopped producing new strips for the syndicate many years ago. They have been recycling the old ones ever since, like they do w/ Bloom County. Unlike our dear Mr. McE, he was kicking against the syndicate restraints to “keep it clean”. At the time, he had been publishing his work in sort of an old-fashioned comic book format (some conflict w/ the publisher kept him from doing the regular books…I think he wanted more of a cut), and my husband and I had been purchasing them on a regular basis. We were VERY disappointed when he decided to stop doing the strip. Enough so that I haven’t kept track of what he’s been doing ever since.
