Reminds me of my own little sister trying to kill a fly with a squirt gun. We had to get a new keyboard after that.

Well, I finally made it again to be up at 1:15 AM (EDT) and be among the first to see the new strip. Too bad tomorrow’s Saturday, and we’re beeing cliffhanged again

Luciano looks like a little lost puppy in the first panel, left behind by his friends. I think he’s a match for Inky. Sigh, nothing til Monday now.

Margueritem, what do you mean, we have nothing ‘till Monday? What about the comments? Of course, at the time being, there’s just the five of us.

I say let the sun rise and the speculation fest begin. But not before I get some sleep for myself, too.

And now, ladies and gentlemen, the question is not “Will Inky zonk Luciano?”; the question is “Will Inky slip up and smite the monitor with his Zonk-ray before, or after Luciano makes it through the portal?”

    Well, I think I got 1 out of 2:
Here it is at 10:20 PM and I get to see Friday’s strip. Don’t know what I did or didn’t do before to not get it.
    .
I think I hit it that Luciano will have to escape Inky by flying into the monitor. Inky doesn’t need to fly to attack, just point his fingers.
    .
    Two observations:
    1) The lines are on the floor again in the first panel. And with a semi-circle. We know that has meaning but what? And, I think, it foretells that this arc will go on for quite some time.
    2) Luciano will not have time nor the inclination to pick up his hat.
    3) Inky isn’t too smart! After almost a full circle he is still not firing in front of Luciano in anticipation of his flight path.

[So I can’t count. Sue me!]

  15. Fairportfan

Fairportfan said, about 1 year ago

Oh - in answer to someone who was wondering in the comments on yesterday’s strip, this strip makes 233 strips in this current story arc.
    .
The “Midsummer” arc looks to be 170 (not counting the pages of “cast interviews” at the end, which add an additional seven.
    .
The “Man in Black” story runs 136.
    .
The first colour arc runs about 235, but they were fairly conventional single-tier strips.
    .
“The Girl on the Piano” runs about 235, but switches from single-tier to double tier format about a third of the way in.
    .
“The Borgia Cantus” is about 138, but it’s very plot-heavy.
    .
And “The Tragedy of Henmellyn” runs, i think, 126.
    .
(The reason i’m saying “about” is because i’m going through my collection and counting them, and i might be one or two off.)
    .
But it definitely looks as if this is going to be the longest ever.

BTW going back to count the strips, i hit the final panel in “The Tragedy of Henmellyn” - the earlier panel of Dru holding Hen’s body in her lap and mourning her is a tearjerker, but it’s sort of a conventional one (not that there’s anything wrong with that).
    .
    But this one:
    http://picayune.uclick.com/comics/pib/2004/pib040612.gif
blindsided me when i first saw it.

Edit: Fairportfan, agreed - that was the perfect culmination to the Henmellyn story. Totally unexpected.

I think Mr. McEldowney never liked the hat. It looked OK but was too much trouble to draw. He just did it to please us, like putting Thorax in that other strip.

    3) Inky isn’t too smart! After almost a full circle he is still not firing in front of Luciano in anticipation of his flight path.

Easier said than done. Moving targets are extremely difficult to hit. Besides, Mr. M. isn’t showing us the places where Luciano may be dodging up or down, plus accelerating more quickly than one would think a cocker spaniel-sized insect could go. Inky could well fire in front of him, but he’d have to anticipate Luciano’s movements in 4 different directions!

Plus twist his body around, which probably isn’t helping his aim one bit!

    .
Ah, but Mr M IS showing us Luciano’s flight path - at least for the last quarter circle and nothing to indicate that the previous parts were different. In fact, from the energy trail, one might infer that it was just a simple level flight. Twisting one’s body is not too difficult. Inky, at the center, can turn a lot faster than Luciano can fly, at the circumference.

I just realized I was reading my watch wrong. It is now 2 AM for me (2:08 actually. It took me a while to write this post). And no, margueritem. I haven’t had any caffeine. (At least not since Tuesday, and that caffeine was in the form of a chocolate bar)

Here’s one for you physics annalysts to think about: wouldn’t the plasma bolt circle have to have a radius equal to Inky’s arm length? Think about it and see if you can justify what I mean. (Of course, it wouldn’t look as impressive.)

  32. Mikkail

MikkailGenius_badge said, about 1 year ago

So when it’s slow like this with only some 30 plus comments posted within the first hour after the strip comes out, how many of you addicts do what I do and go back to the previous few days to see if any one has posted something new?

That’s probably why it takes me at least an hour now to read this strip. I wonder if there is a CA like the AA? I may need help!

  35. UncaAlby

UncaAlby said, about 1 year ago

Skulker: still easier said than done. Don’t forget, Luciano has already demonstrated a proficiency at avoiding demonic plasma blasts!

Besides, it’s hard to actually catch a fly, unless your species evolved a mechanism for it. Inky doesn’t need a plasma blast; what he needs is an 8,000 pound frog.

  37. Fairportfan

    Speaking of catching flies:

Story about Miyamoto Musashi, generally believed to be the baddest samurai who ever lived.
    .
He was in some village, and stopped at an inn to eat. A couple of local would-be bad-asses spotted his Extremely Good/Valuable sword and began muttering amongst themselves about how much it might be worth and how they could get hold of it.
    .
Hearing them and not being n the mood for slaughtering a few incompetents that day, Musashi, without looking up, began catching flies in mid air with his chopsticks.
    .
And then letting them fly away.
    .
    Unharmed.

Lucianos flightpath is essentially AROUND Inky - whats the betting on Inky wrapping himself up in his own plasma, allowing Luciano to escape with impunity? He might even be able to salvage his HAT!

Also, back a few strips when Luciano was hurled away by Inky, his feathered foot “concealing” his groinal region. I just thought, perhaps incubii just extrude what they need, in the manner of a snails eye stalk?

    (Thats a high Ewwwww factor, I know…)

Re today’s edition, I wonder if Luciano has a strategy here. Is he flying so fast in a circle that he perhaps could trap the incubus in a sphere of his own plasma?

What a weekend this will be! G’night!

I got through the tragedy of Henmellyn just last night, and I choked up. Guess I’m just a sentimental slob!

This story arc has been going on a very long time, but when you consider that much of it was done 3 a week instead of 5, it’s not so bad. Just from what I’ve read so far of the archives, Brooke doesn’t do anything by half measures and the results are always worth it. He’ll conclude this in his own good time.

Lastly, Ink does look like he’s spraying lightning like a bug spray to get Luciano. Then too, I suppose a 37-pound fly will try to evade destruction the same way a one-ounce fly would.

  46. Nabuquduriuzhur

Nabuquduriuzhur said, about 1 year ago

Henmellyn’s story was a sorrowful one.

  47. Ray C

Ray CGenius_badge said, about 1 year ago

Regarding the radius of the plasma: it can be larger than Inky’s arm, depending on its propagation velocity. Picture yourself with a hose spewing water and you’re spinning…the arc will be larger than your arm length.
From the picture, it almost looks like Inky is doing a 37-pound discus throw. A new Olympics event?

  48. r80

r80 said, about 1 year ago

Amazing how someone here know the physics of throwing plasma. I gotta start hanging around Starbuck’s so I can learn these things too.

But Luciano does a mean split “S” and Immelmann roll, huh gang? With no defensive weapons he’s going to have to trick Inky into using his own weapon against himself to get outta this.
