    I make the same resolution every year:to give up smoking.
    (Though, apparently, you have to actually start smoking for that to count.)

    Phoebe is a very thoughtful young lady. However I agree with Marigold. Sometimes she grabs hold of some new-to-her thought and runs for the horizon scattering “but what ifs” and “maybe we shoulds” all over the landscape.

    It’s more difficult for kids, because, to most of them, the real New Year’s Day falls in early September. Unless they’re Jewish, of course; if they’re Jewish, they have four to worry about.
