One of my favorite Far Sides: Few people know that Pavlov’s first experiment was to ring a bell and have his dog attack Freud’s cat…

I feel for Phoebe—that and the EBS (Emergency Broadcast System) test tone on radio and TV both jarred me. Marigold could accelerate Phoebe’s school bell de-sensitization training by magically re-programming Phoebe’s cellphone to ring with that sound…

I suffered the same problem. But one day I walked into the principal’s office and rang the bell. They punished me, but it felt great. Since then I was not afraid of the school bell =D

You want startling, imagine that EBS Tone coming out of your cellphone on your bedstand full blast at 10:30 PM or later… They did one for the first time for an AMBER Alert about a week ago.

Millions in Central and Southern California were home in bed asleep (not out driving where it might prove useful) and to put it mildly they were not amused. And were Opting Out the next morning.

Oh dear…I would have been terrified and (later) incensed, too. Having grown up during one of the chillier periods of the Cold War, that EBS tone, along with the local air raid siren, always made me freeze on the spot, waiting for the dreaded news and the grim instructions that, thankfully, never came—but it could always happen tomorrow…

I still think of our 24 year old daughter as being Phoebe’s age. She even looks like her. I wonder if she had that same reaction to the school bell yesterday. It was her first full day in her first teaching job.

It could be worse, at least they don’t get tornadoes in the northwest.

She did better… meaning, perhaps, that this time she didn’t entirely leap out of her skin… or wet herself?
