I thought that I would never see,
A child who would so desperately,
Kneel, and to a parent pray,
That she would not have a school sick-day.

I too declared my place a sovereign nation. Since then the navy has allowed only staff with top secret clearance to electronically pick my rolling code.

I find it sad that most people think Phoebe would try to get out of going to school. I understand though – just about 100% of modern culture universally commands children to loathe school and avoid it at any costs. And then we wonder why kids to bad in school! Because they’re expected to hate it, and they’re very good at living up to our expectations.

I think that has something to do with the history of education. Back before the 1960’s school was were you went to learn the basics to function well in society, like reading, writing and arithmetic. Then they started trying to “improve” education (anyone remember the New Math and Metrics?) with all kinds of touchy/feely crap they were spouting in liberal colleges and universities. Academic performance plummeted, so they started instituting more and more tests to see what worked and what didn’t. Now we’re in a situation where everyone teaches to the test and the students know they’re being shortchanged so they don’t even try or care anymore.

I just LOVE this family Welcome to Phoebestan Home of the Dust Bunny, cymbal of our nation. Out national flow is the fuzzy green thing growing just behind the moldy cheese and to the left of the sock, the oldest land mark in our nation. Legend say the sock just appeared under the bed one day and no one knows why. It is now currently home to countless unique life forms. in the Nort west corner you’ll find the historic battle field from the war between the just out of reach game cartridge and the bent coat hanger. Check out the wonders of our natural beauty, see rough draft mountain as it over looks grape juice stain lake and on the south end the 9th wounder of the world the clean spot on the floor where an end table used to be. Don’t forget our newest attraction the sunny spot under the window covered in shedded unicorn hair. And coming soon Teen Magazine mountain and other attractions associated with teens.

Don’t you think it is a bad idea to let a sick child go to school and infect others?

I do think it’s a bad idea to let a sick child go to school and infect others. I’m sad that people are surprised at the idea she would want to or would fake being sick.

Well looking at the last few strips, Phoebe wants to go to school because she only wants to be in the lead star in the play. In other words kids sometimes want to go to school because going on that one day has benefits for them. Phoebe wants to go to school because she has the benefit of being a star in the play.

    (Sigh!)

…Then, the whining Schoole-boy with his Satchell
And shining morning face, creeping like snaile
    Vnwillingly to schoole.
    —“As You Like It”

We need no special theory to explain
why children of this place and time should be
just like the children of all prior ages,
but if we did, it would suffice to note
that parents of today are far more likely
    to hold some anti-intellectual stance
that rubs off on the kids and makes them balk.

Even the home-schooled scholars need to be corralled before lessons begin. It’s just plain unnatural for a child to sit quietly and attentively for more than 10 minutes, if that long.

The expressions in panel 2 are really quite moving.

Well, I wasn’t commanded to hate it, but the kid that made the daily declaration that he was going to cave my face in made it the clear choice.

That or the principal that claimed I was “Just being difficult”, despite documentation from the psychiatrists that said otherwise.
And then went and told the teachers this without consulting my parents.

Phoebestan should’ve gotten in touch with Greater Llewellynland; they’ve could’ve hooked Phoebe up.
