    During rush hour there are forty billion people using the same off-ramp.

    What I always hated was the Portland habit of honking at the person at a red light or stop sign when there were oncoming cars that made it unsafe to right turn. Gee, you want them to get hit? Brilliant…
    .
    When someone did that to me at a red light, I’d wait until it turned green, even if the traffic opened up to where I could right turn on red safely. I wasn’t about to reward them…

    For once I agree with Rat. My favorite is when the offending driver wake’s up just in time to be the last one through the light

    Rat’s calculations are on a global scale.

    I think most of us agree with Rat more often than not … we may not take our responses to his extremes, but we’d sure like to …

    What annoys me are the ‘automatic horns’… the ones that go off the instant the light changes.

    We all wonder about the guy driving way too fast and pulling weird maneuvers..What a fool!……But when we’re late for work, we’re that guy…

    I often wondered why the French never stopped bumper to bumper at the lights, until I witnessed a situation where the lead driver didn’t pull away immediately the lights changed and everyone else quietly (the French rarely sound their horns) and calmly pulled past him, leaving him still on his mobile or whatever.

    This is a reason to have audible alerts built into new cars to sense when traffic lights turn green. They seem to do everything else technologically!

    @Nabuquduriuzhur

    I had a mate who would get out of the car and walk back to ask the “honker” what was wrong … maybe a taillight not working or a tyre going flat on his car, etc.

    I was also warned by a colleague in Portland that it wasn’t recommended to do this in the USA because many impatient drivers also carried guns (or was that most all drivers carried guns, or something just as stupid).

    Hey, in many developing countries (e.g., India !!) the horns start BEFORE the light changes.

    @Nabuquduriuzhur

    what makes you think that habit is exclusive to Portland? [BTW, WHICH Portland? Maine? Oregon? UK?]

    @dukedoug

    My Dad would get out of the car and smile and wave at the honker.
