    Kids today would just whip out their phones and Google it.

    Okay, who was Linus quoting when he read the book?

    Whoa….just how old are you Linus…?

    Imagine the earthquakes if the moon had been that close.
    Wouldn’t work because the speed of the moon’s passage would be insanely fast to remain in orbit. Even if the tidal action of the planet inside the Roche Limit didn’t tear the moon up.

    Linus must have incredible eyesight to see that the moon (a quarter of a million miles away) has moved almost a sixteenth of an inch further away since the last full moon. All the scientific loose ends get tied together if the moon was created some 4 billion years ago when the earth was impacted by a Mars-sized object. The five feet per century number seems a bit off because it would imply that the moon is older than the universe. Linus is sure a smart kid, though.

    How much is that in metric?

    I too, wondered.

    1500 miles = 24140.16 meters
    5 feet = 1.524 meters

    Hmmm…how does that jive with the Biblical creationist in Linus?

    Linus was also a scientist and a philosopher. I recall one strip where Charlie Brown was telling Linus that gravity was weaker millions of years ago. Linus bounces a ball, and comments, “By golly, they’re right!”

    I always loved the Sunday “Peanuts” with the clever first panel. Today’s with Snoopy using the moon like his doghouse is a true classic!

    I’ll just point out that the moon’s orbit is rather elliptical, and it can indeed appear to be farther away on some nights than others…

    The earth’s Roche Limit is 11,000 miles (A Different Sky on the eBook’s next page, discusses what Linus says at greater length), so the moon was at least 4,000 miles outside that limit.

    Of course, that contradicts the 6,000 earth’s age you probably believe.

    @TEMPLO S.U.D.

    The theory the Moon was created by a collision of a planetoid with Earth was William Hartman.
