    Looks like a complete flop to me.

    A flip-flop.

    I never could climb a rope or a pole, either, CB. I remember “The President’s Fitness Test”—which I totally failed. Nothing like failing right out loud in front of the whole class. Guess that’s where I got my dislike of anything like strenuous physical activity. If you have to run to get there, I’m not going.

    Nope, it would have been better to just hang around.

    Would it not be nice to at least allow good old Charlie Brown a triumph now and then? Or would that be too far out of character for him?

    I wouldn’t say he never has a triumph. For instance in one of the more recent strips he beat a bully named Joe at marbles, though I forget Joe’s last name; something starting w/ A, I think. Plus, in A Boy named CB he won the spelling B at school, though he didn’t quite win at the Annual Spelling B.

    This reminds me of my favorite Peanuts cartoons, which are the ones where he tries to fly a kite. He often finds himself hanging upside down from a tree.

    Isn’t anyone going to comment on the red CB, how Schulz would never have done that?

    @Jim Spock

    Bill Melendez did. Probably some of the Fawcett crest book covers did. Bold, blocky colour schemes were quintessential of mid-century design.

    If you isolate the last panel, Charlie Brown can’t even commit suicide correctly.

    What animator Bill Melendez would or wouldn’t have done in an animated TV special is irrelevant to the daily black & white strip. Mr. Schulz would NOT have used a “bold, blocky” (or, in this case, tacky) color scheme. Not on the Sunday color strip, and not if the dailies were in color. Regulars here know how I feel about this ridiculous colorization.

    This was a delited scene in the storyboard for “It Was a Short Summer, Charlie Brown”.

    I daresay “the kids in the camp” are NOT even looking at, much less speculating about, Charlie Brown and his abilities to “not be a flop”. He’s trying to prove himself to….who, now?
