Today’s military does the same thing, Snoopy.

They gripe because if you seem contented, Sarge will find something unpleasant for you to do. The Army hates to see a man grin! (according to Zale).

Today’s military? Sorry, but bitching has been a military tradition for centuries.

I have served in the military. The difference between griping and complaining is:
Complaining is expressing your dissatisfaction with any given situation and expecting the situation to change because you’ve complained about it.
Griping is expressing you’re dissatisfaction, knowing nobody will change it, and then getting on with getting the job done or making the change yourself.

Very fitting story arc, considering that the 100th anniversary of the start of World War I is almost upon us!

You got that right! Nailed it! (I served in the Air Force for 20 years, and still work for them as a civilian employee)

I gripe about the summer a lot because I hate it.

Probably because I was born in Winter.

Charles Schulz was a sergeant with a .50 cal machine gun team although he was only sent into combat at the end of the war. He claimed that he only had one opportunity to fire his gun in combat…and had forgotten to load it. The German solder he was aiming at surrendered anyway.
